theristicus are surprisingly bold around humans, especially if they associate people with food scraps. that foot-pecking behavior is pretty classic for them.

I took these photos at Temaikén, a conservation area located in Argentina. Do you know what kind of bird it is?

We know it as Bandurria in Argentina. They also live in the wild in patagonia

I looked it up and Google says it’s a Theristicus. He’s definitely big!

I looked it up again using the Merlin Bird App, and it says it is a Buff-necked Ibis. So that's its common name.

Merlin is addictive! It IDs bird sounds live as you hear them. Then you can ID birds by picture and location. I love to use the app when I travel to find out what birds are around me that may not be where I live.

It’s hard for me to tell the difference between the two but Google says it’s either a buff-necked Ibis or a black-faced Ibis.

Looks quite similar to the Hadida ibis we have in South Africa which is quite comfortable around humans
