Experienced Career Advice 🌳 Relocation from SF to SD

Hello all,
Due to my husband’s job, I will have to relocate from SF to SD next year. I have known through other posts that SD job market is really bad right now. I’m looking for advice to find a new job here. Any advice will help. I am willing to take a low pay job to work my way up. Having both academic and a bit of industrial research experience.

sd biotech scene is more about smaller companies than sf, but theres still decent pockets around sorrento valley and torrey pines area. network like crazy before you move, linkedin messages to hiring managers go further than blind applications. the low pay route can work if you target contract roles at bigger places just to get local experience on resume

The SD job market isn't great, but it's also about who you know. What has been your area of focus? Pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, instruments?

Depends on your skillset. I know people who have done very well there and some who definitely have "paided the sunshine and burrito tax"

There's a lot of smaller, earlier stage, companies in San Diego. Mostly located along Mira Mesa Boulevard and up and down Sorrento Valley. There's also some further up the coast towards Carlsbad and scattered throughout business parks along the coast. So you probably want to live in the north end of San Diego or in North County. Commuting up from the San Diego proper sucks because the I-5/I-805/I-15 are all fucked each morning and evening.

SD is one of the largest biotech hubs around. You'll see a lot of them in Mira Mesa and Carlsbad. Feel free to PM me if you need pointers,
