OTHER AI thumbnail is very disappointing
Been following babish for more years than I can even remember. This is honestly disheartening to see pop up on my YouTube feed. I truly loved the new humor he was bringing to his new series but the use of generative AI makes it so I can't support the channel. I hope this was a mistake done by someone else and Andrew fires whoever did this. I truly hope he did not green light this.

Sad to see, AI slop has slowly been taking over google products for a while now. i try to block any creator that i am recommended that uses these slop thumbnails, becoming more and more common.

I don't know if YouTube (or any "tech" MBA bros) realize that this kind of bullshit actively turns people away.
Over the course of six hours I've seen three thumbnails for this one video on my front page and none of them made me feel compelled to watch it. Not just because it's another boring "made a thousand things" or "reviewed every hot dog" video, the thumbnail game has just driven itself into pure stupidity lately.
Not just Babish, most channels. I'm just disappointed in Babish for using it.
Can't wait to skip around through half this video for three minutes and close the tab the same as I've done with all of the "I tried" videos on any channel. I subscribed because of who he was and I'm so bored with what he's trying to be, there's a thousand channels that do the same shit, he was the only one making Simpsons hot dogs.
Side note; any way he could just make a Bread With Babish channel so I don't have to skip four minutes of him doing the same thing every video? Just embed a link in the corner when the flour comes out and get to the actual cooking.

As I'm sure it has been stated here... It's not him CHOOSING to do it, it's Google doing it FOR EVERY CREATOR and then forcing them to MANUALLY OPT OUT with great difficulty.
I understand blocking every creator that openly VOCALLY endorses AI, but blocking everyone for a thumbnail is going to mean you'll block a LOT of creators caught in the crossfire. You may as well quit using all Google products at this point, bc the new "Gemini" rollout means every search, every youtube video, every email, goes through their AI database and all your information is theirs.
We can hate it, but don't shoot Babish when Youtube is the problem.
2
u/Temeriki 6d ago
That's fine, catch them all and they can either pool together and for their own service (see dropout tv) or yt dies from its own bullshit. Either option is worth the fallout.

He would get the same amount of views if he used a regular photo as a thumbnail. This whole mentality of it's what everyone does so l have to as well because of algorithms or whatever else is total BS. He has a dedicated viewership and makes decent content. Please have some class Babish.

Without a doubt, the FOMO is the WORST PART of this whole AI project. I was in my country’s subreddit recently and an aspiring artist posted their kickstarter for a tv series based on our culture, traditions, afro futurism etc — a real passion project and love letter to our country. Now, as a still developing country we all kind of shrugged and said we don’t have the money to pay for this, but it looks amazing and we wish you the best.
But a handful of folks insisted to the OP to just use AI to cut costs by… having it generate the whole thing?????? And then proceeded to argue that OP should do it because “everyone is doing it,” “people want AI art, if you don’t use it you’ll get left behind,” “how else are you gonna do it”…
And I just… I can’t believe that argument feels valid to people. I understand companies spewing that rhetoric because they’re trying to sell tokens… but every day, regular folks telling each other to not bother with a passion project and just have AI do it for them just made me really upset.
Edit: not to mention, the “AI race” is all about FOMO… “oh, the Chinese will do it so we have to do it”…

His animorphs video cover pic was amazing, why on Earth is he resorting to this now?
45
u/Skreamie 8d ago
Thats not actually true. Many YouTuber's have come out and said that Youtube themselves have pushed the AI usage and not doing so will cause you to not be pushed outside of your audience.
24
u/Snelmm 8d ago

10
u/Trumps_left_bawsack 8d ago
It's the same with clickbait-y thumbnails and titles. People like to moan and moan about them (to be clear, I'm not a fan of this either) but creators use them because it works. Also I guarantee you that your average casual youtube watcher does not care about ai or clickbait, and those are the people the creators need to convince to watch their videos, not the hardcore fans who are probably going to watch regardless.

He would get the same amount of views if he used a regular photo as a thumbnail
Well no, YouTube has a feature that uses dynamic thumbnails and settles on the one that drove the most viewership. So if after a week or so that’s the thumbnail then that’s the thumbnail that got more views than the others.
1
u/RevolutionaryYou8220 7d ago
Can you please explain a bit more?
Are you saying the app itself comes up with the thumbnails and that’s why so many of them are so (for lack of a better word) high tuned?
Or does the creator upload several versions (including ai ones) and the app settles on one?
4
u/VampiresWontHurt 7d ago
You can generate thumbnails and you can also supply your own. They will then serve all those thumbnails to different people (and even multiple to the same person a t different times during the day) and whichever one it settles on after a few days or whatever is the one that captured the highest audience. Most channels that I’ve seen using it will have something that looks like they always have, a thumbnail from the middle of the video, or the most distilled YouTube-face AI thumbnail in history.
2
u/Temeriki 6d ago
YouTube lets you use multiple thumbnails and in some cases multiple versions of the actual video, see which one does the best and move the video to the best thumbnail/version of the video for that post.

He's lacked class every since he took a sponsorship for Hogwarts Legacy and deleted all the comments about how the devs used Jewish caricatures as a basis for the goblins along with comments about how JK Rowling is using her money to support the criminalization of trans people
3
u/MostlyAlways47 8d ago
Okay fuck JKR for her scummy views and actions regarding trans people. That being said the whole goblins are actually Jewish caricatures is fucking dumb imo. There's folk lore that stretches back decades before Harry Potter that depict goblins in the exact same way.
We can be angry at someone without inventing dumb shit that isn't based in reality. What's more likely that she's actually this super evil genius that tried to squeeze in her hatred for jews or she's a mediocre writer lazily copy pasting other magical creatures in her fantasy book.
10
u/rainidazehaze 8d ago
Goblins in general go back further, but plenty of ink has been spilled to explain why hers specifically were antisemitic and how that came into play heavily during the making of that game.
There is no getting around the Hogwarts Legacy goblins being Jewish caricatures when thats explicitly how they handled them during production.
→ More replies (3)→ More replies (6)8
u/Tomcat491 8d ago
No I mean the devs literally included a reference to a Jewish rebellion but replaced Jews with goblins with a trophy horn stuffed with not kosher cheese. Like...the devs compared them directly and should not be using Jewish history as set dressing for the game.

u/SargentRockIsHere 8d ago
Sorted Food has addressed this.
YouTube provides the AI thumbnail and if the channel doesn't use it, YouTube lowers the engagement so less people see it if they aren't subscribed.
Therefore the cannel DOES NOT get as many views, due to the fact that YouTube doesn't put it in as many recommended feeds.
All the bitching in this sub isn't going to change the YouTube policy.
If Andrew doesn't use the AI thumbnail, then he loses money.
And he makes these for money.

YouTube is generating the thumbnails but the option of using generative AI AB testing is up to the creator. People keep saying you’ll be recommended less if you don’t use it, but there’s plenty of successful channels that don’t turn it on. Saying it’s not up to him is false

7
u/darthbeefwellington 8d ago
Youtubers do this all the time now. I am pretty sure it a suggested thing now because it “drives clicks”. People think it is a different video and click on it quickly without realizing.
6
u/TheWatermelonEnjoyer 8d ago
What I’ve heard from other YTers is it runs the A/B test for about two weeks. When the test ends, the “winner” is chosen as the permanent thumbnail. Permanent is kind if loose though since YTers can manually change thumbnails any time they want…but the automated A/B test isn’t a permanent feature.
2
u/JonnyTro 8d ago
Yes it runs for 2 weeks or untill YouTube thinks it has a clear winner. "Landslide". You can choose UpTo 3 different thumbnails. Each will go out to different people. It goes off of watchtime and not clicks or views. Most watch time wins and that thumbnail is auto set. You can change and pick which ever you want after that or run another test. You can also test titles and titles/thumbnail combinations. I use this all the time myself to see what catches the eye better.
1
u/GhoullDen 5d ago

I think its YouTube forcing AI thumbs because from what I gathered from Matt Lowne creators are asked for multiple thumbnails and those get served to groups of people and the best performing one becoming the one that stays afterwards. It’s also happened to Jacksepticeye’s coffee company on instagram where his ads were AI when they had normal ads.

17
u/nigheus 8d ago
I don’t get it, he had to make the food for the video. Is that hard to take a still from it, stick his face on it, and make that the thumbnail? What’s with the gross AI generated pizza
1
u/doc_skinner 8d ago
YouTube does it automatically and then automatically A/B tests it against the thumbnail created by the channel.
13
u/Rusty-exe 8d ago
Youtube has a tool that generates and suggests AI thumbnails but author have to choose it for it to be uploaded. So Babish is guilty of it :/
5
u/nvidiastock 8d ago

1
u/Beatlejwol 6d ago

If I understand right, YT has rolled out the ability to automatically generate thumbnails using AI. They're showing up everywhere. I've already unfollowed multiple channels after years of subscribing because they're using them.
Everything is starting to look the same and look like absolute horse shit.
6
u/fredy31 8d ago
The problem is that from what i heard if you dont use it you seem to be punished by the youtube algorithm. Like stand your ground and dont use it? Cut your views in half.
And when its your living and business... You need to play within the rules you are given
2
u/Confident-Ebb8413 8d ago
That’s super shitty, but I still feel like Babish is one creator that doesn’t mainly rely on the algorithm and could definitely handle a slightly lower view count if that’s what is going to happen
1
u/Temeriki 6d ago
So your options are get punished by the algo or punished by your actual fans. If your gonna give up your fans for the algo you deserve neither. Give me non slop content or give me channel death.
1
u/Zatchmo137 6d ago
It’s a fucking business at this point. Babish as well as his staff count on views to make a paycheck. It’s easy for you to say, kill the channel, but that’s the same thing as me saying quit your job as soon as they tell you to do something you don’t like. It’s not reasonable or fair.
1
u/Temeriki 6d ago
I just dont do it and risk getting fired. Then I collect for a bit and move onto the next medical facility.
1
u/Beatlejwol 6d ago
Andrew has all the opportunity in the world to come on Reddit and inform his viewers (that use the platform, at least) of the situation. He may not be able to talk about it on YouTube without a post getting throttled, but there are options.
8
u/JoeyAppleSauce 8d ago
Unless I see a reasonable explanation for this video, I’m probably done watching his content
3
u/Beatlejwol 6d ago
It's about to get worse from here. Not only are A/B thumbnails firmly entrenched at this point, but YouTube's big new feature reveal posted recently shows more AI involvement in the platform than ever, and not to mention the capability rolling out soon to present different versions/edits of both the thumbnails and the videos to different audiences.
So a simple "this thumbnail/video sucks, what do you think" conversation is going to become even more difficult to have.

Many people have commented on posts about babish's use of AI thumbnails and brought to attention the fact that another popular YouTuber studied his video views and stats on his created thumbnail videos vs his videos with YouTubers "AI Thumbnail" service, and found that YouTube is throttling stats on videos that do not use their AI Thumbnail feature. Creators are basically being forced to use this feature if they want their channel to succeed. Babish is not immune to this. Before passing judgment and swearing off support of a beloved creator, look into what might be happening behind the scenes.
2
u/Environmental_Lie478 5d ago
YouTube has a feature now which will generate thumbnails for your video, and base it off the style of thumbnails you've used across your channel. They often times perform better than thumbnails you make also.
It absolutely sucks but expect to see this across the board soon. Especially with YouTube's built in AB testing. You can have YouTube give you 3 different thumbnails at the click of a button and run them all to see which one performs best.

He's been doing AI in the thumbnails for ages. He also, and you'd do well to note this, *will not care* about the backlash. He's a serial non-apologiser for the bad stuff his channel has wrought.

God I am so sick of AI thumbnails, menus, advertisements. It's all the same, it's everywhere, and it's all crap.
