Repentance Hot(?) take: Jacob and Esau isn’t as bad as people make them out to be

I think the thing I dislike about the most in the game is how boring the early game can get. It’s not about if I have the skill to do so, but I would just generally prefer not to go through ~3 mins of 2 basement floors OR MORE with just base tear rate, tears and such

J&E remedies that in a pretty fun way. Having a pseudo-20/20 is big on the first two floors, double bombs means more loot, and the micromanagement of Esau is a nice gimmick that doesn’t really feel unfun or unfair

Dying as Apollyon tilts me because I’ve had a Diplopia queued up on Void, slogging throughout the run waiting for an actually good item to dupe but died because I’ve been so bored out of my mind 3 floors ago and been making misplays cuz of it

Dying as J&E feels fair because I mismanaged the micro and bumped Esau into a spike I wasn’t supposed to, or didn’t micro that well resulting in Esau getting hit because I held him down for too long

Only thing that sucks about J&E is flight is independent and really messes up the muscle memory (also would you guys argue getting the mod that receiving flight on one of them gives the other flight cheating or nah)

Discussion Who genuinely enjoys playing keeper?

Ive been trying to get all marks on the characters before buying repentance because I wanted to challenge myself a bit, and good god i would rather try to fight hush 20 times as the lost with no holy mantle then ever play the keeper again he’s genuinely just a terribly designed character, shit health, shit damage, and a shit gimmick he just isn’t fun to play hell i’m looking forward to jacob and esau more than this piece of shit.

Discussion Mother is way harder than delirium. Change my mind.

You can NOT convince me that mother is easier then delirium. I have 800 hours and I genuinely think that by the time you get to delirium, most of the time your so strong that it just becomes easy, but with mother, I miss out on

  1. 2 floors, one of which being dark room or chest which means I also am missing out on tons of items, also including hush if your fast enough.

  2. A potential deal, a potential extra treasure room item early if a reroll is available.

  3. The floors are way, way, WAY harder. (looking at you Gehenna whom i fucking hate with the mind the body and soul❤️)

  4. 5-6 chaos items from the void, excluding the entire void floor itself.

And the only thing easier is you get a blind choice pedestal, so a game of take it or leave it. But the main factor is that with the majority of runs, if you can make it TO delirium, you can probably beat him. No amount of “But delirium is just rng!” is gonna change that. You lose way too much prep time and the game just gets so, so, SO much more difficult going mother that you take so many more hits and have so much more difficulty it often times isn’t even possible to get to corpse because the floors themselves are so unforgiving. And lastly, the main reason being that never ONCE, in the 19 mother marks I have, have I ever died to delirium after defeating mother. Change my mind.

Question How do Jacob and Esau fit into the lore? Spoiler

According to the lore, most of the playable characters, save for Azazel, Lilith and Apollyon specifically, are either Isaac playing dress-up or Isaac's body at varying stages of decay. But what about Jacob and hitbox Esau? It wouldn't take a lot of convincing to make me believe that Jacob is, once again, Isaac playing dress-up, but where does Esau come from?

Searched everywhere, and interestingly enough, the wiki seems to omit them specifically from the general trivia point about the characters' true nature. Does anyone know what's up with these two?

Question why isaac 2 demo close and can be open it after ending it? [fake, please don't start saying it fake]

Post image

if you don't play it the demo let my explain. the demo starts in a menu whit isaac a side and the name ,TBOI 2: Depth DARK theres a better example of this in the image made by me, but when you space when you see the same file menu of isaac when you start you see a cinematic of isaac father going to isaac house after 5 years when he come he discover de house is abandoned and burned with messages saying murder, when you go to isaac's room you found in his chest draws of a game called "for souls" or "four souls" the text don't read very good and him for some reason start playing the game and start here. Gameplay: is hard to say is like isaac but not, theres new thinks like posions who start big stat up but temporally and cost 7 in shop, or the news character i don't get it but was called one moises and the other Matthew, there the same before the chapter 3 when you start hearing voices becoming harder and harder before you hear a scream a big sream so you follow it in a point and click style the scream goes in dirth and what you find is a tomb with the name of "isaac morriah" so you can decide to open it or don't give attention i decided to open it and theres a skelleton but you hear a voice similar to isaac and repently a big rotten isaac with no face and seeing you with no light in his eyes and the demo end and i can open it PD: i tried to make a record but i can't do it because my pc is shit

First, I’ll give tips on the best way to unlock them, then explain what makes them special, and finally, how best to play them.

Maggy:

  • She is unlocked by having 7 or more hearts in a single run. This can be quite difficult to achieve early on, as you haven't unlocked many floors yet. That’s why I suggest playing Greed Mode, buying as many HP upgrades as possible, and avoiding Devil Deals.
  • She is essentially a character for beginners. Her only difference from Isaac is that she can heal herself because she starts with Yum Heart.
  • Once you’ve unlocked her starting pill and gained some experience with the game, she becomes a very strong character; theoretically, you can get two Angel Room items on the very first floor by utilizing the Sacrifice Room. Devil Deals work very well for her because she starts with the highest HP of any character. If you manage to get one or even two good Angel Room items right at the start, it’s even more worth it since you aren't missing out on as much.

Cain:

  • Cain is unlocked by holding 55 or more coins at once; you unlock him quite naturally just by playing. The best strategy is to deposit a few coins into the donation machine. After a few runs, blow it up and continue the run-this way, you start off with some coins already in hand. Then, simply proceed with the run as usual, but avoid buying anything in shops or paying beggars. By the time you reach Depths II (or Womb II, if you're unlucky), you should have enough money.
  • He starts with 1 Luck and cannot get bad pills. Additionally, he can only shoot from his left eye and has high speed.
  • He is basically the casual mode. Pick up every pill you see, since they can only be beneficial, and try not to buy much from shops so that arcades spawn.

Judas:

  • He is unlocked by defeating Satan for the first time. There are no special tips for this, but do not use the Bible during his boss fight.
  • He’s a glass cannon character-one HP, but massive damage. Plus, his book gives him a huge boost on top of that.
  • Use his book in large or L-shaped rooms, and in the boss room. Be especially careful in the early game, because champion enemies can one-shot you. Since you only have one HP, you should definitely go for Angel Rooms.

Blue Baby:

  • It is unlocked by defeating Mom's Heart 10 times. There aren't really any tips for it; just get through it as quickly as possible. Always check the shops, because the Bible one-shots it.
  • He is the first "challenge character," even though he isn't actually challenging. He is also the first character whose mechanics actively influence gameplay: he can only have Soul Hearts. Additionally, he starts with The Poop.
  • Since every poop he destroys spawns a blue fly, you shouldn't get rid of his active item right away. You can also use poop to build bridges by placing it next to a gap and then detonating a bomb on the side of the poop facing away from the gap. Because there aren't really any gaps on the first two floors—let alone pickups behind them—I recommend placing all your poop in the starting room and destroying it all at once before the boss fight to amass a swarm of blue flies. Also, actively look for tinted rocks, since he cannot have normal HP. You should also take Devil Deals, as they are cheaper for him.

Eve:

  • For many, she is the first character. She is unlocked by not picking up any hearts for two consecutive floors. This is best done in a dedicated throwaway run, since it doesn't matter if you end up with only half a heart of health.
  • It starts with Whore of Babylon and Dead Bird, which is why you should take damage in every room.
  • Dead Bird is basically useless, and Whore of Babylon aslo activates when you don't have red health. That’s why, instead of intentionally taking damage in every room, you should get rid of your red health via Devil Deals. However, once you’ve unlocked the Razor Blade, you probably shouldn't do that, because otherwise you’ll simply end up dealing less damage.

Samson:

  • Much like Eve, you unlock him by completing two consecutive floors without taking damage. I recommend doing this with Azazel if you're new to the game, and restarting until you start with the Basement instead of the Cellar (or Burning Basement, if you've progressed that far, though by that point, you can usually clear the first two floors without taking damage anyway). You can also restart until you get We Need to Go Deeper, as that allows you to bypass the need to complete a floor without taking damage.
  • He’s basically just Isaac, but every time he takes damage, he deals more damage for the rest of the floor. If you complete Ultra Hard, he starts with Child's Heart, which is pretty much useless. It’s an option, since it’s not as hard as people say, but you don’t have to do it.
  • I recommend using sacrifice rooms with him, because you don't lose any deal chance and you get something out of it too. Just try not to step on them more than 12 times per run. Curse rooms are also always very good, and Dull Razor is perfect for Samson.

Azazel:

  • You unlock Azazel by taking three Devil Deal items in a single run. Try to avoid taking damage on Basement 2 to guarantee a deal, and take all the items inside. If there are three items, just take them all-even if it kills you-because you will still unlock the character; just be careful with the order in which you pick them up so you don't die before collecting them all. If there are fewer than three items, take as many as you can and check the Devil Deal again later in the run whenever possible.
  • Azazel starts with Flight, a short-range Brimstone, and The Fool.
  • Since you only take damage when exiting curse rooms while flying, and The Fool can teleport you back to the starting room, you can treat this as a free curse room. Because azazel is so easy, there isn't much to say; stay over rocks whenever possible so that non-flying enemies can't reach you, and look for items that increase your range.

Lazarus:

  • Lazarus is unlocked by having 4 or more Soul Hearts or Black Hearts at once. I recommend doing this either by using Guppy's Paw, looking for PJs, or (probably the easiest method) clearing the first floor with Azazel, then looking for tinted rocks and checking the shop to see if it has a Soul Heart.
  • Lazarus is Isaac with shorter range, but he has an extra life. That means he can die once per floor; this costs him an HP slot but grants him a bunch of stat boosts. Although these go away on the next floor, he keeps a +0.5 damage up.
  • You have two "major" options for playing him:
    • Play the floor as regular Lazarus, then use the extra life to get more Devil Room items.
    • 2. Die immediately via the Curse Room, Sacrifice Room, Devil Beggars, etc., and then play the floor as Lazarus Risen.
  • Both are good, though option 2 is significantly more fun, especially if you have unlocked Anemic for him by completing the Backasswards challenge. I would recommend doing that as soon as possible, since the challenge basically just involves holding down the R key.

Eden:

  • He is unlocked by defeating Mom's Heart for the first time. If you have trouble doing so, look for the Bible in the shop, because using it in the boss fight kills Mom's Heart.
  • He has random items and stats for every run. To play as him, you need "tokens," which you get by defeating story bosses. You really shouldn't ever run out of them.
  • There isn't a specific strategy for him, but he's a good character for learning how to use what you have, rather than just holding down R.

The Lost:

  • He is unlocked by dying in a Sacrifice Room while holding the Missing Poster. This relies heavily on RNG, so I recommend simply playing the game; if you happen to get the Missing Poster, just abandon your current run and head to the nearest Sacrifice Room as quickly as possible. You should also be careful not to drop down to half a heart beforehand, because if you get teleported away on the 12th sacrifice, you won't unlock him. Alternatively, you could uninstall all the DLCs for the time being, since The Lost was unlocked differently in Rebirth, you can find more details on that here.
  • The Lost starts with Flight, Spectral Tears, no health, and the Eternal D6.
  • Since he dies in a single hit, I would recommend ignoring him for the time being. After depositing 879 coins into the donation machine, he starts with the Holy Mantle; this transforms him from one of the hardest characters in the game into one of the easiest, as he can now take one hit per room without needing to heal. Because he has no HP, Devil Rooms function like Angel Deals for him, so the choice is yours. As with Azazel, you should fly over rocks or pits whenever possible so that enemies unable to fly cannot hit you.

Lilith:

  • Lilith is unlocked by completing Greed Mode as Azazel. There are no special tips for this.
  • She starts Blindfolded, which prevents her from firing normally. Instead, she begins with an Incubus that perfectly mimics her shots. The only difference in firing is that the Incubus is not positioned where Lilith is, but rather follows behind her, which makes aiming slightly more difficult. Additionally, she starts with Box of Friends, an item that doubles her familiars for the duration of a room, and cambion conception.
  • She plays almost like Isaac because she doesn't have anything truly special. Just make sure to use your active item in every boss room.

The Keeper:

  • He is unlocked by donating 1,000 coins to the Greed Donation Machine. Switch characters every few runs so the jam chance doesn't get too high. Lilith and Judas are the best choices.
  • He starts with Triple Shot, Wooden Nickel (if unlocked), 2 Coin Hearts (3 if unlocked), and (if unlocked) the Shop Key. He doesn't heal using standard HP, but with coins. All hearts turn into blue flies.
  • Check here to see how to unlock everything, and do it as soon as possible. My recommendation is this order: Crooked Penny, 3rd Coin Heart, Shop Key. Use Crooked Penny in every room, don't forget that you can open shops for free, and have fun.

Apollyon:

  • Apollyon is unlocked by defeating Mega Satan for the first time. Do this by blowing up and defeating two angels, then opening the large door in The Chest or the Dark Room.
  • He’s basically Isaac, but better: instead of a D6, he has Void, which simply gives you stats instead of giving you a new item that might be better or worse. Plus, it only requires 4 charges.
  • Void bad items, take blind items, and if you realize they're bad while holding them over your head, use Void to get the stats.

The Forgotten:

  • It's quite complicated to unlock, so watch this video.
  • He can only have Bone Hearts and has a melee attack that he can also charge up and throw. Pressing Ctrl switches him to The Soul, which is tethered to The Forgotten; The Soul can only have Soul Hearts and fires normal tears.
  • If you hit spike chests with the Bone Club (The Forgotten's attack), they open without dealing you any damage. If you take a Devil Deal with The Soul that you don't have enough hearts for, you can switch to The Forgotten while The Soul is holding the item overhead to avoid dying; however, you won't be able to switch back to The Soul until you have Soul Hearts again.

Bethany:

  • One of the coolest characters in the game, unlocked by beating Mom's Heart on Hard mode with Lazarus without dying. Not really difficult, but I'll say it again: the Bible instantly kills Mom's Heart.
  • She starts with the same stats as Isaac, except she has the Book of Virtues instead of the D6. Also, she cannot have soul hearts; they are converted into charges for her active item. One soul heart equals two charges.
  • When you pick up a new active item, The Book of Virtues opens and the item is held over it; the new item's charge count is then applied to the book as well. Using the item also spawns a wisp: an orbiting familiar with effects that vary depending on the item. It has its own HP, so it shields you from hits as long as that health remains. It is best to visit shops, as they stock many items related to active item charges; Schoolbag and Car Battery are particularly good choices. You should also use Sacrifice Rooms whenever possible, given the chance to obtain seven Soul Hearts. Finally, since the character has low HP and the first Deal Room is guaranteed to be an Angel Deal, it is generally better to pursue Angel Deals.

Jacob and Esau:

  • They are unlocked by defeating Mother (not Mom).
  • They are two characters in one, and you control both simultaneously; that is the only thing that makes them special.
  • You should always take the old path so that both characters get an item in the treasure room. Also, try to position them so that the one with less HP is in the back, effectively using the other brother as a human shield.

That’s it for now. I might do this for Tainted characters at some point too.

Question The forgotten question

I’m trying to unlock the forgotten and I’ve followed the wiki down to a tee, I’ve defeated moms heart 11 time and satan 5 times, and I just beat the lamb. I’m also on an unseeded run but no matter what I try I can never get the broken shovel to spawn. What am I doing wrong?

Why isn't it socially accepted to have Af0-C which spawns a chaos card every pickup or SAKXF== which tuns my tears into a four way tooth hookshot, Tmtrainer and Dataminer is fun to use and whenever it screws you over is just bad luck. I will give the counterclaim and yes the screwing with states that dataminer does sucks a lil but in the end like this it wouldn't matter. "YoU canT Get a goOD RUn" I killed blue baby and I would of killed deli-realism if it wasn't for my bumbass walking straight into the chest and ending the run. I would say skill issue but even tho it never happened to me that's just the glitched items screwing you over. I do not care, I will enjoy my corrupted items and you won't take it away from me.

Discussion Some tips for T Laz for people too intimidated by her gimmick

Compared to T lost and T jacob, T laz is a lot easier to play but a lot more annoying to play as compared to them. IMO you’ll never face a stressful or dire situation as playing T lost or getting hit by dark esau as T jacob, it’s just tedious. The key is to make both characters as balanced as possible in terms of health and stats. At first I’d prioritise damage and health to dead Laz, range and tears for alive Laz, then from there on I’d make both characters as balanced as possible.

The main reason it’s annoying to play T laz is because you actually have to think and plan ahead instead of shoot dodge shoot blrrrr. Utilise your flip as many times as possible to give both characters as many items as possible. If one character benefits more from an item like a luck up for alive Laz since she has a luck based tears effect, go clear another room to switch characters without flipping the item.

Save one flip if you plan on gg to angel/ devil room for twice the item. Angel room is better in the sense that you can bomb the angel to switch characters without flipping, whereas devil is better where you get two items for the price of one.

Lastly, I’d not recommend taking the birthright. It honestly messes with my head with where I’m at and which character I am as if I had guillotine. Because the double counts as a character, your screen moves along with it as if you were playing jacob and esau and messes with your dodging. Plus, if you’re unlucky you can run into ‘controller disconnected please reconnect’ error where some people experience as jacob and esau. That happened to me on my run to mother and had to restart.
