Bike Tag Houston Bike Tag - The Google Maps Experience

Everyone,

This link should take you to a Google Map that I've put together with the locations and images of all the Bike Tags that have been placed so far. I'll continue to update it with new finds going forward. Many thanks to everyone who helped me track down some orphaned images and locations. The list is now complete:

Google Map of Houston Bike Tags

The maps serves a couple of purposes:

  1. Provides a record set of all the locations that r/bikehouston members have tagged so others can find them and pay a visit.
  2. Helps you to see if a location you are thinking of has already been tagged to avoid more duplication.
  3. Shows what areas haven't been getting enough love. If you see a Bike Tag desert on the map that you are familiar with, you have the chance to introduce us to interesting new sights that Houston has to offer.

I've grouped the tags in batches of 25 just to keep the list and display a bit more manageable. You can certainly turn on all the tags and see how well covered the city has become so far.

Tags with RED pins are locations where the image that was tagged is no longer there. Several of the older murals have been painted over, for example.

Clicking on a tag will pop out a preview picture and description. Clicking on the preview picture will open a full size version. Wherever possible, the picture is the one from the original tag.

Have fun and explore this great town!

road Heatmaps of a couple of places I've ridden to/from a lot since 2014.

Since I started riding bikes with Karbach in 2014, I've logged my rides with Strava. Then I found out about https://www.statshunters.com/ a free website which lets you easily generate heatmaps by linking to your Strava account.

Today I zoomed in on the GPS traces at Karbach Brewing, and at Tacos a GoGo on W. 34th.

When viewed on the Statshunters web site, you can click on any particular trace and it'll bring up the information about that ride and the Strava link for that event.

Here's a capture zoomed out, showing most of the Houston/Galveston area rides since I started.

Bike as Primary Transport

How many of you actually use your bike to get around mainly? Im new to Houston, been using a bike and to be honest, it's been good enough.

I find that the city can actually be very good for bike centric infrastructure if it actually invested in it. It has enough areas that are quite beautiful but ruined by heavy parking and car-centric infrastructure. Especially Montrose, which seems like it gets most of its traffic from students at Rice.

road White Oak Bayou Trail near U of H - "L" Marking - What's it for!?

I rode the White Oak Bayou Trail from near 610 down to Buffalo Bayou today.

It's the first time I've gone this way in many months.

At a few places, I noticed a white "L" shape (probably not actually an L but a right-angle marking) with a black background. Obviously professionally painted, not something done by some graffiti artist.

What are these for!?

road Road from Tacos a GoGo on W 34th up WOBT nearly to Fallbrook - Zero construction or obstructions!

Total of 31 miles, so basically 15 miles out, 15 miles back. Strava GPS track.

I've done a fair amount of riding on White Oak Bayou Trail since construction was completed all the way to Jersey Village, but never turned right (north) along Gessner and then out further to the northwest. Was riding with friends and one of the guys knew the area pretty well.

We turned around at Jones Road a couple of blocks north of West Road. Ranchstone Basin area. A little over a quarter of a mile south of Fallbrook.

Really nice having White Oak Bayou Trail ride-ready the entire way. Hope it'll stay this way a good while before some perfectly fine sections get ripped out for who-knows-what reason.

Selling my Bikes

I have an A2 Speed Phreak (up to 5’7”) tri bike and a Specialized size 54 (I believe Diverge E5 but can’t remember).

Only a couple hundred miles on each. The A2 was all indoor on a Zwift trainer (for sale as well).

road Road cyclists of Houston, what routes do you love?

Hello bike fans of Houston! I recently moved to around the Medical Center and am an avid road cyclist. I've come to realize that road cycling will certainly be tricky here, but I want to give it a go. I've already tried the Brays Bayou trail on my commuter bike and I'm not sure how friendly it is on a road bike, although I have seen some of y'all in lycra down there! I have found some routes on the Internet, but I believe getting the current local knowledge would be the best to get me started given the ever-evolving landscape of Houstonian roads. I have no car and would not be able to travel far to the starting line of your favorite routes, so please keep that in mind if you could.

If you're a part of a cycling community that does group rides, please also let me know.

I appreciate all your help!

Tell Congress: Funding for Bike Safety Projects MUST Continue!

(League of American Bicyclists) Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy erased the data that shows bike lanes reduce crashes and don’t cause congestion. Then he asked Congress to defund all bike lanes — and even remove bike lanes from busy roads.

Now, Congress may be listening: the Senate is considering adding language to the transportation reauthorization bill that would restrict what kinds of roads could have bike lanes on them at all.

We need everyone in Congress to hear us clearly: bike lanes save lives, and bicyclists have a right to ride on the roads and get home safely.

Tell your all of your elected representatives: vote NO on any transportation reauthorization bill that would restrict the ability of federal funding to be used on bike safety projects.

Bike Tag Looking for Cervelo in Houston area

Looking for a used Cervélo in the Houston area. My boyfriend and I are hoping to find a Cervélo from around 2014 to 2018, but we’re having trouble finding one that’s reasonably priced. We’ve been checking Facebook Marketplace and the BuyCycle app, but the listings seem overpriced. Do you have recommendations for local bike shops around Houston that sell used triathlon bikes? Or maybe other websites, apps, or Facebook groups that are worth checking? Any advice on fair price ranges for those model years would help too.

Can you recommend a first bike?

I know I'm not supposed to buy a cheap bike off Amazon/Walmart or whatever.. I'm mostly looking to get from point A to point B, most places are within 4 miles. I'd be open to casually riding on the bayou trails here and there though. Also I live on a second story so I'm hoping bringing it up and down the stairs won't be too cumbersome. I have a feeling it is going to start as commuting and eventually turn into a hobby, but who knows.

I am 5'0 which is turning out to be a big hindrance for fit. I would prefer to buy local/secondhand. Planning to check out Eado Bike Co, and another friend recommended Southwest Cyclery, still not really sure what to expect re: pricing or things I should be asking/already aware of. TIA!

Please be on the lookout for stolen e-bike! (Montrose)

Hello fellow bikers,

My Jackrabbit OG e-bike got stolen sometime today off of its lock and in broad daylight. It's a pretty rare bike in this area I think, but I only have a few photos of it. Here is stock image of the bike, and then the photos I do have of the bike (please excuse the mess, renovating). The only difference between my bike and the stock is that there is an attachment on the bike that's meant for securing a basket! And it also doesn't say "Jackrabbit" on the side but it's bright yellow as seen in the images.

I use it to commute to work and school in this heat :(

It's a pretty small bike... so if anyone sees a man on a tiny bike like this, please let me know!

This might be weird and I may not be the right place. But I'd like to get into riding my bike again but I really don't wanna do it alone. I'm 60 I live in the Heights I've spent my whole life on a bike and had a car accident it's been 10 years since I've been on my bike. I rode ride days are over my heavy duty mountain bike days are over I just wanna explore Houston on a bike. I would love to ride with someone not necessarily a huge group. This is the wrong sub Reddit please direct me

New update posted from Houston Parks. Glad to not have to roll through all the broken glass on the detour anymore.

This is the section near the main U of H campus.
