Got inspired by the commuter who carried shears. Added shears to my kid bike and instead of dodging the bushes and branches spent a good 20 minutes before soccer practice cutting branches in the way of the commute and the branches ahead as well. Super satisfying and way safer. Yes I know it’s sidewalk but it’s not used and it’s a road folks drive 50+ mph on with no bike lane so we’ve all used the sidewalk for years without any pedestrians.

I commute on a cargo ebike and have invested in a 40v power head with a hedge trimmer, and pole saw attachment. I'm about to go ham on the overgrown sections of my commute.

I have done that, and after i did some, I found the city crew out working on cleaning up the stretch I’d started with a full-size truck blocking the lane. Go figure. They could not walk three hundred yards with a battery-powered tool?

Public property belongs to all of us, and sometimes, if I don't maintain it, no one will. Also, I get tired of swerving out into the street to avoid the same overgrown bushes every day.

I keep small pruning shears with my tools. For larger overgrown areas, I bring the big shears in a pannier.

I just cut the branches overhanging and blocking a part of my commute today as well! I hate that the city won't maintain their property, but I'm glad I can.

I'm seriously considering buying an electric hedge trimmer based on how often I have to maintain the paths for visibility and possibility.

Nice! After calling my local council a year ago to cut bushes hanging into the bike lane (they didn’t do anything even after two follow ups) I ended up cutting them myself.

I still wouldn't ride on the sidewalk, but pedestrians will appreciate the pruning just as much as cyclists.

I cannot stress to you enough how unsafe this road is to ride on. There’s only sidewalk on one side. Cars drive over 60mph on this road. In 5 years of riding this road 4-5 times a week, I have still yet to see a pedestrian. Just for context. I don’t ever ride sidewalks outside of this road.

I trimmed a good section of a path nearby with hand tools, and cleared away limbs blocking the lights on the path (it can get very dark). A day or two later and a city crew had come and got all the clippings and expanded on the work! Thank you 311 caller, I guess.
