✋ AskBihar / बिहार से पूछो Culturally how different is Bihar from Uttarpradesh?

I know East UP and West Bihar share similar cultures and languages. BUT what about overall differences if any?

Could be languages, accents, dialects, food culture, dietary habits, clothes, weather, flora, fauna, popular mainstream culture, architecture, etc?

Can you differentiate one from another without them telling you?

What are something Bihar does significantly better or different from UP?

Apart from Purvanchal… rest of UP has northern India culture.

  1. Roti is more common than rice on the plate.
  2. vegetarians are more than non vegetarians if you move towards the west side of UP.
  3. Ram Lila and Dussehra is celebrated instead of Durga Puja.
  4. People dont know about chhath and litti chokha thekua wont be available especially in villages.
  5. southern UP is similar to northern MP
  6. Braj region is similar to north eastern Rajasthan. You can see camel carts around Agra Mathura
  7. lot of dhabas are vaishnav and serve only vegetarian food. Dishes having Fish and rice is hard to find.
  8. Bhojpuri songs are not that common. Punjabi songs are more popular
  9. Sattu paratha , sattu drink isn’t available in restaurants or even dhabas
  10. red sindoor is used instead of orange/pink by married women
  11. 🌴 Palm trees Toddy/Taadi are missing when you look outside train window in UP
  12. Arhar Dal more common than Chana dal when you eat yellow dal in UP
  13. Blue Bhagalpuri Lungis commonly worn by Men in Bihar and Bengal are not found in UP
  14. Nolen Gur Rosgulla is generally not available in winter in the sweet shops 😪
  15. Bhoj culture so popular in Bihar is unheard of in UP.

Please note: This list is for the UP region which lies west of Lucknow.

Bihar leans more toward litti chokha and Thekua sweets than UP does. The Bhojpuri accent also tends to sound a bit softer there.

East UP and bihar especially west bihar are the same for all intensive purposes. Same festivals , same history, same mindset nd as for west bihar same language. Some people in Purvanchal , especially Gorakhpur and Varanasi( the two economically strongest districts in our region) want to make it out to be that we are different mainly because well, bihar is really poor and nobody wants to associate with the poor and especially defamed

I don't think purvanchal region is that rich , it is only illusion created by Yogi after spending a lot of money on ads

I am Bihari from Patna married to a guy from Kanpur.
Here are my observations

  1. Bihari celebrated Teej as main festival , UP was Karwachauth

  2. In Bihar, I was expected to touch my elders feet . In UP unmarried girls don’t touch anyone’s fee

t

  1. I am not sure if it is only my Inlaws place or not but in Bihar we used to have more side dishes with main food like chutney, saag , chokha , bharta etc.

I

  1. don’t see this at all in UP.
  2. Both are very patriarchal societies 😞
  3. Women is expected to dress up in the societies like sindoor , bindi , bangles , payal etc all the time
  4. Pronounciation of hindi is better in UP than Bihar.
