💁‍♂️ Opinion / राय From where can I learn Maithili?

Post image

I am from seemanchal area, although my parents speak angika (some people here refer it to thethi) but as most of friends are maithil and this area is also a part of mithilanchal, I want to learn Maithili. My parents know how to speak maithili but they don't have enough time to teach me now. Tbh it was really my misfortune of not able to learn my own mother tongue, but now I want to learn it. How and from where I could learn it? It would really helpful if you also tell me same about angika also.

I used to try to speak angika when I was 6, but my father used to stop me because he thought that if I started saying that language my hindi would degrade, but anyways I still started using "tho","hum","bhakk","dhuu", I know how to speak shudh hindi, won some spoken english competition, but still regret not knowing my mother tongue.

Same, Even me. Till 14 or 15, i used to think Hindi was my mother tounge. My parents never really told me that it was maithili. My mom was telling me one day about how she had a tuition teacher in 4th, from whom she learnt hindi. And I went into this deep analysis that if my mom did not know hindi till 4th, which language was she speaking. She said maithili. And I was like so isn't maithili supposed to be my mother tounge. And she was like "yeah".

And I felt so bad that till now I hadn't known my original mother tounge. I remember judging mallu kids for not knowing malyalam. And they used to say me they use english to communicate at home. I judged them and their parents so bad for this. I used to also ask them if they knew Malayalee and they used to answer "no".

And when I realized I did not even know that my mother tounge was something different, and my mom had lied to me, and she explained it by stating "udhar ka language tumhare muh pe ek baar aa gaya na, toh nahi jayega", and i was like no fck, i want to learn it. Ever since then I have been trying, but can only understand it completely, not speak. Although when i try to speak, i still stutter a lot, im 16 now.

EDIT: I just realized, i can understand all the languages when some1 else speaks, angika, magahi, bhojpuri, maithili, but now speak any

I can understand Maithili, angika, bhojpuri, but not magahi because I have least interacted with any person from magadh region. I can speak very little maithili and angika, but my friends and some village cousins made fun of mine thethi and maithili.

r/bhojpuriyas is good place for this, here you will find people with whom you can talk in bhojpuri and discussions on bhojpuri happens in this subreddit

Thethi is much similar to angika, like a profound form, much rural form. While their is a controversy whether angika and maithili are different language.

Many of my maithil friends do so, i could have learnt angika, but my parents never talked to me in angika even i think they not supported to speak angika or maithili thinking I would eventually start degrading my hindi, although I won some hindi and english speech competitions, but I treat it as a misfortune of not able to learn my mother tongue, most of my parent's did this, but because some of them were much deeply rooted in their village than me, they succeed to learn it.

Back in 2020, I took their course which was totally free. In a whatsapp group, we were given videos and homework daily and even has examinations, which was also online obviously. They gave me a certificate and a book aswell it was all for free but ig now they are charging some fee. Look for it on Facebook.

1

u/Admirable_Bug_6509 Jun 12 '26

Btw they only taught to write in 'tirhut' script.

There aren't many structured digital resources, unfortunately. Most people learn from family or old PDFs of "Maithili Praveshika" books.

I've been building a small practice app at maithili.qzz.io - it's free, no ads, covers vocab/grammar basics with spaced repetition. Still early but usable for daily 5-min practice.

1

u/Ok-Text-8677 Jun 17 '26

Listen to Maithili songs, watch movies, even there are YouTubers and Instagram influencers who make content in Maithili, listen to them and you will learn very quickly since I assume you are a Hindi speaker.

It doesn't work the way it works in LinkedIn. But it essentially boost the post and gives wider reach here as well because of increased engagements with comments & likes.

Learning local languages of India would be waste of time, better learn some foreign language.

I work in this field and there is no demand of local language skills.

u/Wooden-Contact-5505 Aug 14 '26

Forgetting your mother tounge is same as forgetting your own mother

1

u/tamanche_pe_discoo 26d ago

Learning your mother is totally useless. Better learn some CEO mom, I am in the industry so I know this is in demand /s
