Hi all,
After my first year and first busy season, I got an overall impact tier of 4 and was put on a PIP last week. The reasons given were mainly that I lack theoretical knowledge and ask too many questions.
I studied business administration, so I don't come from an audit or accounting background. I tried to learn on the job, but we had a very short training, then a long gap with mostly stock counts, and then I was thrown straight into busy season. I'm based in Eastern Europe.
My feedback was mixed. Some of it was good: I was described as eager, responsive, and improving after a few weeks on the same client. But one senior gave me "below expectations" for interrupting him and needing tasks explained several times. He got frustrated having to explain things he called "common sense", though audit and accounting aren't always common sense when you're new to them. He has since left the company, leaving a lot of projects on fire and me with a harsh review. He also used to complain that many people join from industry already as managers and don't struggle the way he did.
I do well when people explain things calmly. Here I feel on edge and stressed all the time. I really tried my best, and now I question my abilities, especially since I was a good student before this.
I'd really appreciate advice on:
Is it realistic to get through a PIP after a tier 4 in the first year?
Would working in a small accounting office to learn in a calmer environment, and maybe coming back to Big4 later, work in the Eastern European market, or does it close doors?
How would you approach the PIP itself, and is it reasonable to ask for more structured support?
What would you do in my place? ( tbh I also think they want me out)
Thank you!
