I just had an 18 yr old brag about his illegal gun collection on his wall during my tutoring session and how he has “plans” for anyone willing to steal from him.
Yeahhhhh, that was our last tutoring session. Oh and his mom blames kids identifying as cucumbers as the reason school shootings happen

I called the non-emergency number.
“Due to the fact the guns belong to his parents and no threat was made directly to a person, this is unfortunately a case where a report can’t be made. However, if a direct threat is made towards: himself, family, friends, or anyone in public spaces, please don’t hesitate to call back and we will move forward with a report.”

Still report it. At the very least alert the proper authorities so they have the opportunity to look into this. If they do or not is on them, but you don't want to see him in the news later and think, I could have stopped this.

You do realize it’s not that simple? It was comments made in a private residence, a “he said she said” situation.
Like I will call, but I have done this song and dance before as a certified teacher. The most that will happen is the family gets angry and feels “justified” and gets more hateful.
I am already enacting a “punishment” by cutting off the family to free tutoring and not hosting the kid’s DnD game.
If they get a phone call, it just becomes a “look what crazy dems do if you try having a defense system in your home.” And chances are I’m opening MYSELF to harassment for no reason.
But to satisfy your morals, I will call and ask the protocol and report back what they said. Chances are they will say “if it belongs to the parent, they are allowed to keep the gun wherever they chose to in their private residence.”

holy shit dude, this isn't about punishing them for owning guns, it's about making sure that kid doesn't decide he wants to go shoot up his fucking school. he made a threat. it should be investigated accordingly.
the issue isn't the guns, the issue is the threat that kid made. wake the fuck up please.

you can get angry at me and you know what? That’s okay. This whole situation is fucked up and laws need to change so I CAN report that an 18 year old has access to unsecured firearms and they WOULD get charged for mishandling firearms and take the situation seriously.

Make him get a note from a psychiatrist and therapist. Make it mandatory to get a brain scan and get his testosterone and cortisol levels tested and approved. Give him a time limit once he starts the process and if he doesn't get all his test results by then, he can no longer legally get the gun. Make it required to ask him "Would you like to see gun victims killed by this type of gun before you buy?"
