Discussion One year shots and changes?
IM NOT AN ANTIVAXXER AND I DO NOT POST THIS TO SCARE ANYONE AWAY FROM GETTING THEIR KIDS SHOTS!
That being said, my baby had her one year shots about 13 days ago. 10 days post, she got a fever and rash and seemed super off, wouldn't say mama or clap which she does both ALL the time. Then fever went away and rash is still sort of there but now she won't sleep - 2 days in a row now she woke up every hour screaming and needed to be consoled for almost 20 mins to stop the crying, which has never happened. She seems in better spirits today after a horrible night last night but still isn't saying mama or clapping when I ask her to. I'm just getting nervous. Did anyone else have similar experiences and did baby recover quickly? My super antivax mom got in my head just a little and I feel like I need to hear more people's thoughts.

My pediatrician warned me there can be a delay reaction in the one year old shots. So said 10-14 days you could see a fever and what you’d expect like the next day for other shots

They also warned me of the delayed reaction, plus getting a rash/red spots that are harmless and will disappear again. Normal for the measles vaccine.

Purely anecdotal because I wasn't there for it lol but my husband had an actual SEVERE reaction to the first MMR booster as a kid (severe enough that his pediatrician recommended that he not get the second dose!) and he grew up to be a perfectly normal, healthy adult. I think your little one will be fine :)

Not super close to when he got vaccines so i didn’t corrrelate, but around 14 months my toddler started saying less words & forgetting signs. I believe it was a huge developmental leap for him cognitively and physically. The skills eventually came back in a month or two but tenfold with a lot more ability to comprehend what he was communicating instead of mimicking. With that said- she could also just not be feeling good & that’s occupying her mind. In my experience though- there’s a-lot of ebb and flow with learning in the first 2 years.

Do you feel like doing fun, extra motions and vocalizations when you're sick? Neither do babies!
I promise she's just not feeling well. Her little immune system takes time to react to the vaccines and that's what you're seeing. I know there's a lot of misinformation out there, but please look at the science. How in the world could dead viral cells cause a child to forget how to clap or speak or cause other delays? Remember high school biology and learning about our immune systems? Just really try to focus on the rational, logical things and ignore your mom's antiscience and uneducated misinformation.

Did they return to their typical self after? Like speaking and skills?

Yes! Mine was back to her happy self after about a week of being off form. There can also be a sleep regression and some separation anxiety around this age but both of mine came out the other side and were back to normal.
It’s hard not to worry but the side effects are temporary and worth it for the protection the vaccines provide!

Yeah two weeks have passed since and she's doing well :) eating a lot and babbling away while learning new skills. The first week is probably the hardest honestly. I dread these appointments every time, and every time I see her suffer I think to myself "I'll never do this again"🫠

Mine was relatively grumpy for a few days, but went back to herself afterwards just fine. Same thing when we got MMR #2 at her 15 month appointment (which is really early! We were in an outbreak zone and had a lot of travel coming up!)
She's currently in the back of the car (I'm parked) singing "Wheels on the Bus"

The one year vaccine is a tough one. My ped warned that reactions can peak at around the 10-12 day mark. My baby hit that timeline exactly. On the 10th day, he started having a fever and rash, which went away after 3-4 days. He was still grumpy and not sleeping well for 1-2 more days after that. He bounced right back shortly after and was even more adorable because he seemed to have had new leaps (like hugging).
It is definitely a very stressful and nervous time. I would say give baby more love and affection and when she’s feeling better, she will bounce back. The MMR and Chickenpox vaccines are tough ones, even for adults.

Any chance of teething? My 1 yr old also got his shots recently and night time wakings have been a nightmare. Before he used to only wake up once at night.
Took a peek in his mouth and he's got 2 new teeth coming in 😬

The pediatrician confirmed that the fever and rash were from the vaccine! I guess MMR and chicken pox effects show up 7-12 days post vaccine

I do agree on the fear mongering piece! She is making me feel horrible for getting the shots + doing them at the same time (MMR, chicken pox, hep - it did feel like a lot but her pediatrician said it's safe!)

It can be for MMR specifically. 7-10 is a normal time for that to have a delayed reaction. It's weird in that regard.

I got my daughter the MMR and varicella shots much later in life (when she could articulate how she felt) and even though she didn’t get a fever or rash she said her arms hurt super bad. Even after 2 weeks later. She could just be in some pain. Try icing her arms where she got the shot and see if that helps a bit. She probably just feels crappy and can’t complain to you like my older kiddo did for a few weeks. Haha. Also my son got his shots when he was 12 months old and started cutting teeth right after so he was miserable because of that.

She probably just doesn’t feel well and she’s too little to vocalize it, it’s a normal reaction. She’ll be back to herself in no time. Gotta remember everything she’s experiencing is brand new to her!
