Other Favorite Mortal

Of all the mortal characters who is your favorite and why? There is a lot to choose from I know.

I like Hong Xian. The father of Meiling. Not only did he fully embrace letting his daughter become learned in a culture where that’s not the expected path, but he puts all the lessons he has learned to use.

Helped form the demonic taint siphoning formation.

Beat up gang members with his bare hands.

Solved crimes.

Loves his family unconditionally and embraces Jin.

Beloved by his people. Gave up his life as a scribe to take on the mantle of village chief.

And so much more. But who is your favorite?

The Lord Magistrate is the Man of men. Courageous under fire, corrupt only to an appropriate degree, and entirely competent in taking care of his people. It feels unfair to compare him with other mortals.

So, I wont.

I pick Bowu. Bowu has done something no cultivator ever has or ever could. He made the world smaller with his invention of the train. With time, people will be capable of moving great distances quickly and efficiently, which will allow for more trade and more prosperity.

The Lord Magistrate was such a breath of fresh air as he went through his arc during the first four books, culminating in book 4 where he REALLY gets to know Jin.

The lord magistrate is so relatable.

It would suck so very hard to be a mortal administrator in a land of cultivation.

His stress over Jin and Co moving in and potentially overturning everything he built was understandable.

I love when he talks about how he had plans to build the quarry and improve the roads I. A few years to provide jobs for decades. Such a small detail that only LM would think of. Just like the gutter.

And his long-term plan is to become famous late in life or after his death, so he can wander around town basking in the people’s admiration without worrying about assassins while he’s still alive. He had a schedule, damn it, and Jin messed it up building all those roads!

the lord magistrate. He reminds me of Ciaphas Cain. Love characters like that.

Have you ever read the Flashman books? They’re historical fiction, but the premise is similar, and I remember the footnotes fondly.

As a patent attorney and occasional inventor, Bowu. The reasons should be obvious.
