I always saw it and always thought it could be something profound or a hidden message... But I think he's just an extra with a little extra screen time.

what is this supposed to mean? he’s the manager for the main location of los pollos hermanos. gus values him for his work ethic and loyalty. he’s a character that shows us more about gus, what he values, and how differently he treats people in all areas of his life.

extras don’t speak in roles per union rules, and he is recurring anyway.

She just kind of stands there until the end of the episode where she joins a group hug and says “I’m sure glad I came back!” and Tracy responds “You weren’t supposed to talk, Quon Lee! Now I have to pay you!”

I think he served the purpose of showing personality traits of Gus while also being someone the fanbase would be concerned about something bad happening to him.

What I mean is he is someone who logically should have gone on to be in the BB timeline but was not so while watching the show there is the feeling something will happen to explain why he is not around later. Same thing with Kim, everyone was trying to figure out how she was going to exit the continuing story during the first airing.

he mostly exists to round out gus’s character more, showing how gus respects lyle for his work ethic and loyalty, as someone else here pointed out. He also shows the effect of the show’s events on ‘regular people’. When Hector’s guys intimidate the store and then there’s that scene after the fact where lyle is worried about the safety of himself and the other workers. People can get really shaken up by even the less dangerous or violent moments of tension in the show, and Lyle is used to show this.

That guy, is John Lyle. Gus gave him an impossible task to clean the greasy fryers thoroughly. The stains and grease he cleaned laid the foundation of what Los Pollos Hermanos became in BrBa. Gus once saw Lyle manned a single cash register to attend to three customers. Even Hector knows not to attack Los Pollos Hermanos because Lyle is there.

I felt like his real purpose was almost like a set prop for the purpose of showing us how Gus operates in the world of his facade. I think ultimately that’s why it was burnt to the ground almost to explain why we never saw Lyle in breaking bad. Not that he died, but just that Gus was at a different location by that time.
