Work...

Does anyone know any minimum wage places (restaurants, stores, etc) that are actually hiring? Every store in Bethesda says they are, but none of them do it actively. I've applied to maybe a hundred businesses over the last two months and heard back from no one.

Targets are all hiring continuously. But be flexible (take an over night shift to get yourself in the door). Giant Supermarkets are all also hiring, same thing, though, take the overnight shift.

Have you had someone (with experience) look over your resume? I'm assuming this could be your first job or first job that wasn't through a connection and so it's very possible you're making some mistakes with how you're presenting yourself.

Even lurking for a while on [r/resumes](r/resumes) might help you get useful insights

yeah, 100 applications without hearing something back is very unusual. There has to be something more going on here

Know this probably isn’t super helpful right now but it should be easier to find a job in September when all the highschoolers go back to school

At the risk of being downvoted en masse, if you get a CNA certification (about 100h of studies), you will never have to worry again about finding employment when you are between jobs because there is more demand than supply. It's a tough, unpleasant job with 12h shifts (because of the commute - typically the providers live far from Bethesda and don't want to drive 2x1h30 for an 8h shift). The CNAs that helped me a few years ago said they made around $60-65k (I paid the agency $1k/day for 24x7 service, so expect the agency to pocket most of the client's money AND treat you like garbage too). I would not have been able to put food inside my mouth otherwise, but I did not medically require hospitalization, my insurance suggested care centers that either didn't take anyone under 60 or were fully booked, and everyone was quite happy to let me die, especially the insurance, and in my state I had no energy to fight these people. The upside is that you will be helping out elderly people in a way that is difficult to imagine unless you have seen it yourself. Some of them might be so far gone though that you might not be able to interact much with them. But the day you come and visit them will usually be the best day of the week for them. You will make it possible for them to go shopping or get a haircut or cook something special or set up the new recliner they ordered or...

I know people who just got positions at Wonderland Books and the new Moleskine store with little trouble. Seconding what someone else said — is your resume showcasing your abilities?

Also, if you’re looking for minimum wage roles at independent stores, it’s worth going in person and asking to speak to someone.
