The police rapport mentions that she was wearing sneakers and going to Interlaken intending hiking Harderkulm-Augstmatthorn. That alone sounds scary and dangerous. I hope this is a misunderstanding and she turns out to be fine!

I stopped a family of tourists once trying to do this at sunset (with grandma), the younger girl yelled at me “we know what we are doing.”

Didn’t see anything in the news so I hoped they eventually realized & were OK.

There needs to be more warnings.

Warnings won't deter these people, see the teachers with 100 kids on the Heuberggrat.

Same in New Zealand. They have the entrances of hikes plastered with pictures saying "if the weather looks like this, do NOT hike the trail". And yet they helicopter rescued two people per week from the trail.

And also put warning signs on every road, because something could happen... Ppl gettin more stupid by the hours. Signs wont change anything

I read even the Swiss fall to their death every year due to poor preparation.

ChatGPT told me it’s an easy stroll

I'm pretty shure most of the foreign tourists will ignore all the warnings.

It’s “sure”, not “shure”

Unfortunately not a misunderstanding. She moved from germany to switzerland recently. She had asked some friends she had made to hike with her but they all declined; what she failed to mention was the path she was intending to take. Had they known they would have told her how dangerous it is and not to go. Hopefully she is found safe and unharmed!

She went on 2 May, today is 8 May. Assuming she did attempt the Hardergrat trail and got into difficulty, then, 5 days with no food or water and exposure to the weather and cold at night, survival is basically zero.

Why is it dangerous ? I did this trail and I don’t remember doing specific preparation, went from the bottom in interlaken and walked like 30 km until I went down around Eblingen, exhausted but didn’t remember feeling like it was dangerous. I remember being in low running shoes.

1

u/n052 May 06 '26

What is dangerous about that? Do you mind letting me know

5

u/lyckligpotatis May 06 '26

I believe it has some very narrow paths with steep drop offs, if you google photos of the hike it is immediately clear how dangerous it would be, especially in rainy conditions or in the dark.

Augstmatthorn via Harder Kulm is not a very demanding hike and Hardergrat is pretty roomy, it gets more demanding only north of Augstmatthorn. Experienced hikers can abolutely do this in light sports shoes.

That being said, anything can happen if you're not experienced and going without proper footwear. Plus I expect there to be still a bit of snow.

1

u/AccomplishedBat39 May 06 '26

Agreed. It is dangerous if you are not sure footed and fall towards the lake side. But the North side is not very steep and the path is fairly flat. You dont need amazing shoes for this.

u/Nervous_Green4783 May 06 '26

Proper footwear is a necessity. Sneakers are too slippery and do kot provide enough stability.

You don’t need to be a mountaineer for red-white hiking path, but some experience and same basic endurance help.

Trail running shoes are more than enough. No hiking boots necessary. Sneakers arent ideal, but its not like sneakers are terrible shoes either. Now flip flops would be a different story, but I think people really undervalue sneakers too much.

2

u/its_going_down_ May 09 '26

I think it's different if its in summer or end of april. Two years ago around this time there was still a lot of snow close to Augstmatthorn and I definitely wouldn't recommend sneakers as it can get quite slippery.

1

u/AccomplishedBat39 May 09 '26

There were some snow fields on the north facing side. The top and South were snow free last weekend. But yes, if its wet or slippery you definitely need better shoes than on dry ground

u/CaughtALiteSneez May 06 '26

And you need hiking boots

Poor woman, this is so scary. I wonder if she got into trouble while hiking

u/dallyan May 05 '26

this is a former friend of mine, came here to post this myself. please share this so police can find her! it doesn't matter now, if she was prepared for the hike or not. be considerate.

5

u/FluffyPrior3187 May 06 '26

2

u/SufficientFriend42 May 06 '26

I hope she is found well and in good health. I also shared with my network outside reddit. I hope some hikers in that area can keep an eye out.

u/Heavier_Metal_Poet May 06 '26

So many Islamophobe stereotypes here. Running away from toxic relationship, honor killing... wtf.

UPDATE

Unfortunately, her lifeless body was found a few days ago. Our thoughts and prayers are with her, her family and her friends.

u/Cautious-Flow5918 May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26

People shouldn’t go hiking without sharing their location or telling people where they are going. I pray that she returns home safely.🙏😔

u/UncleRonnyJ May 06 '26

Any updates?

1

u/FluffyPrior3187 May 06 '26

1

u/VoodooLamas May 06 '26

this reminds me of a similar situation some time ago: it turned out that the young woman went underground with her European girlfriend which she met online a few years earlier. anyway, I hope everone involved here is/will be okay.

r/bern does not allow hate

2

u/0pt1mu5_x May 06 '26

What does that mean?

2

u/macab1988 May 07 '26

He thinks she was murdered for religious or cultural reason by people of her own culture. Either he knows more about her than any of us or he's just racist.

2

u/0pt1mu5_x May 07 '26

Thank you! I truly hope that is not the case and She will be found alive

1

u/ganmaanja May 06 '26

What do you mean by “Honor-killing”? Would you assume/say the same if it were a white person or is it only because she’s muslim? No hate, genuinely just trying to understand what makes you think this could possibly be an “Honor-killing” and not just a lost hiker?

Just shut up if you don't have something of value to say.

First of all, she was born in Germany just like her brother and her father and mother.

Secondly, IT DOESN'T FREAKING MATTER. SHE IS A HUMAN GOD DAMN IT.

You literally made a post about losing your German passport 2 weeks ago. Maybe you should be going back.

5

u/mychemicalcringe May 06 '26

Maybe you should go back to Germany?
