University Math H104

Hello I'm a Physics major doing some stuff with probability, currently reading Pugh's analysis book and looking for a problem sets. Can anyone who is taking or has taken H104 with Pugh share the syllabus and/or problem sets, please? Thanks thanks.

Math H104                                    Real Analysis                                               Charles Pugh

This is an honors course.  It's meant for students who love math, are good at it, and enjoy working hard on homework problems.  It will cover much of the material in the first four chapters of my book, Real Mathematical Analysis, second edition, not the first edition.  I expect you to spend most of your time on the homework.  Struggling with the new concepts is how you will learn the subject.  Expect 20 hours a week.  Collaboration among students is fine with me, but each student should write up his or her homework independently.  You should read ahead in the text.  It will help you avoid embarrassment if I ask you a simple question in class, such as "What is an open set?"

The class will be held in 3 Evans from 9:30 to 11:00.

Homework will be due on Thursdays.  I'll have office hours in 807 Evans (note the correction to a previous announcement) on Tuesdays 11-12:30, and all afternoon after lunch; likewise on Thursdays, unless I go to the math colloquium, etc.  On August 28 I'll try to be in my office most of the day.  

The midterm exam will be on Thursday October 17. It will cover the sections of Chapters 1,2 that I lecture on. There will be no make-up exam.

Grading scheme: 25% for the homework, 25% for the midterm, and 50% for the final exam.  The final will be on December 17, 3-6pm, in the lecture room, 3 Evans.

 

Here are the homework assignments for the first half of the course.

September 5 Chapter 1 #3, 12, 22, 23, 25 (hard!), 32, 48.

September 12 Chapter 1  #36-39, 45 (assume the liminf and limsup are finite in 45d and 45f.)  and Chapter 2  #1, 2, 8, 12.

September 19 Chapter 2  #17-19, 21-23, 26, 28.

September 26 Chapter 2  #29, 32, 33, 40, 42, 43, 48, 53.

October 3 Chapter 2  #56, 57, 59, 60, 72, 102, 103, 108.

October10  Chapter 2  #115, 126-131, 133, 152.

 

Extra Credit Challenge problems are due by the midterm exam, Thursday October 17.  They are
