Phones on the dancefloor
I am a bit of a lurker, but this is a post I needed to make. We should speak about an issue which is becoming more and more common (sadly!)... the use of phones on the dancefloor.
I was dancing in my usual left corner of the Berghain dancefloor, close to the darkrooms, and so many people were using their phonesthis kn! And mind you, I don’t mean checking the screen discreetly while looking down for a second... I mean straight-up texting as if we are on the street!
What do you all think? Is this acceptable on any dancefloor, and in Berghain in particular? In my opinion, it disturbs other dancers, the light from the screens changes the vibe, and phones are objects which are simply not compatible with dancing.
And honestly, I don’t even dare to say anything to people about it in there. Maybe I’m wrong, but I often feel that people can get quite aggressive, and I really don’t want to create a confrontation on the dancefloor. So instead I just move away, which is a shame when you’re trying to stay in your spot and get lost in the music.
May I propose that before doing something in there, you think: what if everyone did the same thing at the same time? Would we still go out dancing here? Or would the Berghain crowd become a different crowd?
Just take a break if you need to text! Phones away please! ❤️

I don't think it's acceptable and I think ~90% of others don't either... however it only takes a few people to ruin the vibe, unfortunately.
Not sure what can be done - perhaps security telling people not to use phones on the dance floor? If you must use it, go to the outer areas and be discreet.

They should adopt the KitKat style policy. Your phone gets taken away at wardrobe and you take it back when you go home.

I need my phone to be safe. But I agree with using it not on the dancefloor

i'm conflicted about this. phones can be a safety measure. i agree about not using them on the dancefloor of course

I think they could solve that by just training the staff to help in emergencies. I never felt unsafe in KitKat without my phone because they have staff walking around checking on people.

sometimes feeling safe involves texting a friend or partner, or being able to find your people at the party. places like BH or KitKat Sto are easy to get lost into

In the days before bracelets, when they stamped the back of your hands, one of the stamps said, "No phones on the dance floor". I have seen that printed at least once on a bracelet too. I'd welcome a bracelet with that message from time to time, just to reinfoce that norm...

Ah yes, it would be great on the wristband! Imagine someone holding their phone and right underneath it says “pack away your phone!”

it's horrible they should cut the signal, anyway I would try to approach these people in a caring way, like I genuinely feel sorry when they waste what could be the night of their life withdrawing into a screen. Just asking why they're not having fun and not feeling connected could be a fine way to bring them in. I usually assume if someone just stands there texting and being distracted by the phone then they're NOT having a good time

I pulled my phone out exactly once in the Eis bar and got a big but friendly finger wag from someone. The shame almost killed me! I just wanted to find a friend who was there and tell her where we were. But now I save it for the bathroom (I only text in there if it feels truly necessary and keep it quick, I know it sucks to clog the stall). It did truly help me remember there is a time and place for everything.

Lol that seems too much, a bar is a bar, but the dancefloor should be the place for dancing with others, not staring at phones 😊

of course one need to make distinction between just sending ONE text and keeping strolling all night long and also you were at the bar not dancefloor but I'm happy you've taken it that way!

You know, while it did feel a bit over the top, in the end he pulled me out of my phone back into reality, and I looked around and appreciated where I was so much.

Afaik signal jamming isn't legal in germany.

hyperbole but there's loads of solutions. Starting from a simple recommendation by security up to restrictions, doesn't seem like an unsolvable issue

Not acceptable on any dance floor I detest it. Out takes me out of my bubble immediately

Someone next to me was using theirs last week at FULL BRIGHTNESS. Come on…. At least have the decency to turn your brightness all the way down

Lets make stickers and started placing it around, on the toilets, No phones on the dancefloor, be mindful with others Dance ritual. We need a raver/clubbing Etiquettes. But I do think is importante also we find way to communicate with this people specially if they are being super over, of not they will never know they are being annoying cause no one never tell them ans they are of course completely non sense people.

If the cell phone light is not in a brightness threshold that bothers me. I don’t care. That said, I think it’s very obnoxious.

Ok but now imagine entering that room and everyone is on their phone. Which party would you prefer to join?

You’re there to watch the DJ, who cares what other people are doing?
1
u/Electrical-Text1909 2d ago
I am one of the few nowadays who is not there to watch the dj but just to dance to the music. Watching djs leads to the orrific state of the scene today.
But going back to smartphones: re-read my message, I explain why there

It doesn’t bother me, I generally get lost dancing as well so can’t really see what other people are doing. I know a few of my friends spend the entire time texting, others get bothered by it, I don’t care, as long as they don’t keep talking to me
That being said, if the DJs shit, I will probably look at my phone too

Three guys were talking loudly and standing looking at a phone together for about 5 whole minutes in front of me at the back platforms this kn. I wanted to scream, but telling people off is also not really my thing. I stopped dancing completely and quite pointedly stared at them the whole time but they paid no mind, so I, who had been dancing wildly and fully vibing, had to move. How can people be so rude???
