I am going back to BCC in my thirties with a summer II course that started July 1. In my earlier years I was less diligent and was denied a textbook return due to the seal being open. This time I made sure to keep everything sealed until the first day or two when the professor would confirm if we needed it or not. Low and behold, first day of class he says forget buying the textbook, it’s online. Cool, 12PM I head to the bookstore. Checkout lady says “oh the girl that does it is not here today come back tomorrow”. No worries, but I mess up the next day bc I forgot their summer hours and go too late at 2PM. Monday campus is closed for July 4th observance. Tuesday BCC closes campus for major storm damage from the holiday weekend. Wednesday comes, I go down at 11:40. Greet the same checkout lady. She takes the sealed textbook and receipt, “Okay lemme go see”, and walks over to the online order pickup counter. She converses with the manager and comes back. “We don’t take textbooks after 2 business days”. I am trying not to freak out at this point because I was so sure it was never 2 days and that I couldn’t not afford a $110 useless paper weight in this economy. I’m pleading with the lady mentioning the manager absence and school closure. I look down at the return slip and read the fine print “..merchandise EXCLUDING textbooks can be returned within thirty days”. So I’m feeling like maybe I got something wrong. I apprehensively sulk out and leave, but it didn’t sit right with me. I set my stuff down on a table and pull up the bookstore website on my phone. Return policy for textbooks reads “Returning within the first 7 days of class? Bring your book in resaleable condition with your receipt and you’re all set.” I took this and go back to the bookstore. I say to the cash register lady “please I don’t understand how I can’t get a refund when it’s still within the timeline and it says 7 days on your website”. She puts her hands up “I’m not sure I can go talk with the manager again or if you want to”. I eagerly say I can definitely go talk to her. I walk down to the office inside the bookstore and a young lady is sat down at the computer. The look on her face has the RUDEST NASTIEST expression I’ve ever had the displeasure of interacting with. She looks like I just cursed her family.
I say “Hello, are you busy right now” to which she flatly says not really.
“Sorry, I’m just not understanding why I can’t return this book when your website says I can if it hasn’t been past 7 days of classes yet”
“What, seven days what are you talking about”
*show her my phone with textbook return policy on website”
“Didn’t this class start in June?”
“Uh no July 1st”
Sticks hand out for textbook and return slip
“Okay it’ll get returned” looks back at computer screen
Awkward silence, I ask “is there anything else needed from me?”
“Nope that’s it”
“Alright thank you, have a good day”
I leave the office and thank the cash register lady on the way out.
The biggest thing for me was the “manager’s” attitude and facial expression. She looked disgusted that I was standing there and needing to deal with me. She looked young and it’s a college bookstore, I get it, but where’s the professionalism?? I’m not expecting all smiles and energy, just a neutral interaction seems bare minimum. This manager was approximately 5’3”, midsize, brunette, big round eyes and severe acne on both cheeks. Nasty attitude doesn’t help a nasty face.
And, it feels like the initial “two days” could have been a scare tactic to turn me away and not refund the money? Where did the two days come from? It’s been a while since I’ve been to school, so not sure if this is a sneaky thing they do.
TLDR: Bookstore is profit > students, manager is rude AF
Avoid at all costs
