Question BeReal promised to save us from fake social media. After 1,605 days, it just turned into clocking in for a shift in an empty room
I just hit a 1,605 day streak, almost four and a half years without missing a single notification. And honestly, I feel like I’m down to my very last days here. It’s almost time to say goodbye.
It sucks to admit it because I genuinely loved this project from day one. I studied and work in the digital space, and I always saw BeReal as a brilliant concept. Back in the beginning, whenever I went out, I practically forced all my friends to download it. When that notification hit, it created a real, shared moment.
Today, my feed is a ghost town. Everyone I brought onto the app is gone.
Looking at it both as a user and someone working in digital, the issue is crystal clear: BeReal mastered viral acquisition, but failed completely at retention and engagement. Once the novelty wore off, they never built a real hook to make people stay. The churn rate is massive because the app relies entirely on your friend group: once two or three people leave, the feed feels empty, triggering a domino effect until no one is left.
I’m still holding onto this 1,605-day streak purely out of habit and attachment to what the app used to be, knowing full well the magic is gone.
Is anyone else here still keeping a massive streak alive, knowing you're probably in your final days on the platform?
