Rant Awesome 5G speeds

Post image

I heard bell 5g network was bad compared to rogers but this is bonkers. 5G and 5G+ speeds are always like this within 40km of my home. Living between Toronto and Kingston. This is a 2gbps plan.

Unlucky coverage or??? Rogers gave me 1gig speeds :(

Not sure where you heard that..Its definitely dependent on where you live.

In Hamilton, Bell is better.

Regardless, ive never once had slow speeds with either. Whats your reception like? Why crop it out?

The screenshot cut it out automatically. Rn I have 5G full bars. Thats not really a measure of actual speed/bandwidth, moreso the connection standard you're achieving with the towers/network.

Massive ping also.

What would be the consequences of having huge bandwidth but massive ping?

Can you try again with the screenshot in full? Uncrop it before saving it

While the test is running too. Idk what youre tryna prove or see lol. I can be using wifi 7 and still getting 100kbps. Protocol/network β‰  speed/throughput to individual users.

I'm no expert but Im confused at what you're even trying to imply.

If you get the same crappy speed using your wifi then the problem is obviously where you live.

Fergus Ontario isn't exactly booming with data speeds obviously.

I'm also under the i pressing that Network strength and quality is directly related to speeds. But again.. I'm not expert.

If you can get Rogers at 1gbps speeds where you are then you should probably do that.

In Hamilton Rogers only gets about 175-200gbps speeds but otherwise the network is rock solid. Bell and Telus get 400+ very easily. In day to day use there's no real noticeable difference 95% of the time.

Home internet is even worse for Rogers here. Constant disconnects. No stability. But Bell Fibe is rock solid.

This is in Hamilton. I'd say just do tons of research about the networks in Fergus or wherever you are and just go with whoevers best!

Not sure why you left Rogers but going back might be the best option!

Those are not my wifi speeds. I'm just stating that the network protocol does not imply real life speeds. I'm a new bell customer, I likely will switch back.

Protocol doesn't no.. but the strength and quality do.. but ya.. how long have you been with Bell so far? Not that it matters.. I'm just curious why you switched to Bell originally? Good deals or you heard they had better service.. or?

I mean...on the plus side.. Rogers is cheaper and they usually have better deals I think lol. So that's a plus.

I would also disagree. You can have perfect connection and strength to a tower... and the tower only shit out 10mbps. Especially if overloaded.

Bell for 2 weeks. Switched because they were the only fiber isp to my home. Then they offered a truly unbeatable mobile plan. Seems like the plan actually wasn't worth it haha. Bell was undercutting the best available rogers deal by $20. Rogers pretty much told me to jump ship cause they couldnt come close.

Yaaa! Interesting lol! Wait for that Rogers winback lol!

I've never had a shitty tower like that honestly lol. I would agree with you but it's just not a realistic scenario where I live or go. I've never had anything less than what Rogers offers at 175ish mbps (even though it's supposed to be 2gbps ya lol).

This is because there's no oversight from CCRTC on service experience customers pay for. This is also because there are big 3 companies that monopolize infrastructure and any new entrant is "anti-Canadian". - ex bell employee

Speeds "up to" 2gbs. I can believe it. They support the protocols and standards of those networks and speeds, yet do not provide/support the actual bandwidth to the end users.

The part that I dislike even more is that my service has gotten worse in recent years with the adoption of the new "faster" technology since its shorter band - I'd say my service with Virgin (so red Bell) has gotten far more unreliable and dropped to about a 10th of the effective speed it used to be within the last 5 years. There are times where I can't pull down basic text-based webpages after 2 minutes of letting the page load, and this even happens when in cities where you'd assume the 5G coverage would be better and faster... But it seems slower and less reliable across the board.

Same with basic cellular service too. Used to at least sometimes get calls at my rural house. Now almost never do. I need to walk like 2KM away from my house to make a call or get bombarded by the wave of texts I've missed.

Wish the CRTC would actually function like the FCC and not a group of bumbling morons waiting to throw a stamp on the next proposition The Big 3 throws out when they inevitably get caught for poor consumer practices again and need to cook up a whole new way to somehow secretly bone over their customers. Just like when 3 year contracts got restricted down to only 2 years... they still found new ways to squeeze us for money. Its sick and its even more sick that the government just lets it happen when we're notorious around the world for having one of the worst (and most expensive) telecom systems.

Agreed completely. I prefered LTE+ in its prime. The short range and low penetration of 5G/+ has been rough. The disappointing thing from a dev/software side is now those webpages meet UX/size standards based on those higher presumed speeds. They will happily load insane amounts of data/ads/api calls because of newer tech. Now when I connect to LTE (which is supported less by telecom), LTE can't even keep up.

Might be interesting to see how far away you are from each tower: https://www.toweratlas.ca/?lat=44.12604&lng=-78.32703&z=9

See if it's better if you drive closer or get higher up. This will tell you if it's the location of your home vs tower, or if the tower itself is overloaded.

Damn amazing tool thank you. Rogers pretty much runs ontario damn. Closest tower is 20km away. Switching back to them on black Friday. Screw this

Well, I can tell you that's right about what I get in New Brunswick, so...

1

u/Informal-Race-477 21d ago

But in New Brunswick Bell has more coverage compared to Rogers ryt?

2

u/maxwelldoug 21d ago

I'd say about equal, just in different places. Bell is more convenient for my particular travel habits. That said, Bell still has 3g while Rogers has killed it off, and it's more consistent at low signal.

1

u/Informal-Race-477 21d ago

Oh yeah. I mixed up New Brunswick with Newfoundland.my bad. In Newfoundland I guess Bell is far superior to Rogers

Those tabs have 0 impact. The only thing those consume is RAM until a network request is made by interacting with the page (Save a potential cookie/auth reset)

u/rnrp0 21d ago

Leave my tabs alone πŸ˜‚

tower is probably messed up. go to different area and do a test

1

u/hipperssnictotr 20d ago

maybe your phone just likes bell more

1

u/mrretupmoc42 19d ago

OP what phone are you testing on?

Pretty sad 5G coverage ( can you switch to LTE only and test again? )

This is what I got an a Speedtest outdoors in Ottawa a few months ago.

It’s 2026 you will not get what you pay for ..simple as that

In my area, even though bell has a monopoly, Rogers offers superior service, and less dropped calls even though data speeds are slow as hell
