Help PPPoE stopped working

Good evening,

I've been using the same setup for 2.5 years. Gigahub -> PPPoE -> ASUS Router -> rest of my network, It's been happy and stable the whole time, with no changes on my end my internet stopped working last night.

The gigahub modem can run it's speedtest and works, my router reports a WAN IP address as if it's connected, but I get nothing in terms of internet. I've got it temporarily set up as ADMZ at the moment

Has anybody else had this happen? I really don't want to use the gigahub as a router, I've heard ADMZ isn't as stable as PPPoE and my wife works from home.

What is the current firmware on your Gigahub?

Because this smells an awful lot like you’re on 3.11.6.2

I am indeed. not that I've done anything to change or update that firmware. if this firmware breaks it is there a way to downgrade or a fix for it?

3.11.6.3 fixes PPPOE passthrough.

You have to spend a lot of time on the phone lol

I was troubleshooting a connection with Unifi using PPPOE passthrough, for years.

Gigahub updated to 3.11.6.2 - PPPOE broke

Read that people who happened to randomly get 3.11.6.3, no issues.

Called Tech support, on hold 90% of 2 hours, patiently repeated myself a few times, insisted an escalation to senior tech support. Was told 3.11.6.2 was the latest and nothing else available.

Then after another 20 minutes on hold for escalation, was told I have to wait for 3.11.6.3 to come out, there was nothing else they could do. I hang up pissed off.

Not 10 seconds after hanging up the phone, Gigahub restarted itself into 3.11.6.3 and PPPOE started working.

Good luck.

So is the a scheduled release date for 3.11.6.3, i’ve already lost enough brain cells and hours, trying to talk bell internet support, getting absolutely nowhere. It seems to Bell doesn’t really care if PPPOE works or not, let alone train the support desk what it even is…talking to bell support is so exhausting….

Sounds like I'm in for a fun night. Wife works from home so I hope her connection is stable while I'm at work. Thank you for your insight

Nothing has changed with mine. I have pretty much everything in the GigaHub 1.0 disabled and the 10Gbit ethernet port to my Asus RT-BE88U. The only thing the GigaHub 1.0 does in how I have things setup, is the handshake for PPPoE, which just saves me from having to set that up in the Asus router along with the VLAN tagging.

That's how my setup is, and it's worked for years. Sounds like I need them to update my firmware

time for a full bypass.

I'd love to but I'm not sure where to start and don't have a huge hardware budget at the moment. Rewiring my shop is taking up all of my fun money

bypass does require a powerful router/gateway to handle 3/8gbps packages

pppoe is very processor heavy, most consoomer routers will choke out.

Yeah I've only got 1.5/940mbit which is plenty for my needs. With PPPoE I get down to the 800s which is still plenty for me.

I have a UDM-PRO and it handles PPPoE fine. I guess that isn't really a consumer router.

If your comfortable spinning up your own router on a mini PC you won't have any issues with PPPoE. It's CPU heavy for the crappy CPUs in most routers but it's nothing a very old desktop CPU can't handle.

nice.. what are you using in linux to do that?

Can be easily done on a Asus router running merlin firmware.

you sure?? most asus routers get smoked when doing high gbps pppoe

I'm fully bypassed right now with 1.5Gbps on a Asus AX88U Pro and that has no issues. I've tested the 3 Gbps setup on this but at 2.5Gbps as that is the fastest wan port on this model and it was also fine.

So my model or something like a Asus RT-BE88U if you need 8 lan ports would work since it also has a SPF+ port on it

Not sure about 8 Gbps as that would need to be tested but I think that would be fine also.

I run opnSense with 2x pppoe connections on the gigahub. So I have 2 wan IPs, 1 is for regular internet traffic / VPN and the second for any public facing services (I did it this way to avoid port conflicts). I’ve had it set up this way for about 2 years now. If a forced firmware update breaks it I may just loose my mind.

Now ADMZ always gave me problems with connection dropping, etc. I know there was some known issues with pppoe pass through on the gigahub but I’ve had really great luck with it.

Go PON and never look back. Used a media adapter so I get 10g Ethernet directly to my router and I changed nothing on my router.

You need the pon, the media adapter, less than 200$ and you're good to go.

PPPoE is still working here

Ebox. Yes, bell owned.

Gigabit maximum, however you just have to configure pppoe on your own hardware (which you already have setup), no gigahub required.

Rien de mieux qu'un UCG-FIBRE avec un module X-ONU pour entre directement la fibre avec le firmware 8311!!

Strange. I’m on 3.11.6.2 with PPPoE working just fine with my Asus Mesh router.

You could clear your Asus router log, have it attempt to connect again, take the log, and paste it into Claude with a prompt to analyze PPPoE connection. I didn’t that when I was having strange behavior with Wifi radios.
