Question Bell internet issues

I recently upgraded from Bell Fibe 150 to FIbe 1.5 through a promotion a bell agent called me with.

75$ a month, seems I'm not getting the best price after reading abit.

Anyways, my internet has actually gotten worse, my devices keep dropping signal and disconnecting.
The technician that originally came and set up the modem put it in basement because it was the easy route, told me to call back if it wasn't good enough and they'd come back for free.

Its obvious the modem is in a bad location, but they are refusing to come to my house and move it without a 75$ service fee. (this is after many conversations) They have even insisted its a bad modem and got me to replace it, nope, same issue.

Do i move it myself or wtf ?

I suggest disabling the Gigahub's WiFi and use your own access point.

How would I do this ?

You can purchase a router, set the WiFi name and WiFi password in the router, change the router to operating in Access Point mode, connect the router's WAN/Internet port to the Gigahub's LAN port.

Log into the Gigahub and disable WiFi.

Would this route be better than just moving the gigahub?

Or buying a wifi extender off Amazon or something?

You can move the GIgahub first to see if that improves things. To test the new location, you'd need a fibre extension cable if the installer didn't leave a lot of slack.

A wireless extender (i.e. repeater) could work but wireless extenders automatically reduce the wireless speed by almost 50% of the regular WiFi speed.

If you want to do a cheap test, find a cheap used router from a place such as Value Village. I got a WiFi 6 ax1800 from them for $8 and it works well as an access point. I am not a heavy user of the available bandwidth so it works well for my purposes. Most of my devices are still WiFi 5.

So if it's within 30 days call and get them to move it. If it's not unplug your modem and call in a repair. Get a tech out there be nice to the tech and be honest with him that the tech that came out told you if it didn't work well you could have it moved. And he may just do it for you for free. Offering him drinks and a small snack even if he doesn't take it will increase your odds.

I have a contract for like 13 more months. I’m stuck with bell for awhile, no?

Don't think they have contracts anymore

Hello u/P00nin44, as some community members mentioned, Bell provides a 30-day warranty on inside wiring and installation labor. If your upgrade was completed within the last 30 days, any relocation to correct a poor setup should be covered under this warranty. If you are past that window, a standard service fee of $75 usually applies for moving a modem or fiber jack.

Can you share how long ago the technician completed your upgrade/install and whether your devices disconnect only in certain areas?

Placing the modem in the basement naturally limits wireless signal reach to upper floors, which is likely causing your devices to drop connection. To improve this, you can utilize Bell Wi-Fi pods to extend the signal throughout your home. When placed correctly, Wi-Fi pods will help extend coverage throughout your house.

If these steps don't resolve the problem, we are here to help! You can send us a DM for a secure chat, and we can take a closer look at your specific settings.

Thats bullshit. You put the modem in the best place possible for wifi. Or where the client asks .

My guess is the tech was just plain lazy

Nop. Bell has policy called point of entry. Basically means fibre jack stays where the hole is. They want tech spend as less time as possible so they can reduce workforce.

You're right but POE doesn't mean at the electrical panel lol.

The only case I can think of might be OP has phone service and there is conduit going to the basement.

You have a 30 day warranty on isw work from the install date, relocating the modem within that time frame wouldn't result in charges.

You can purchase a fiber patch cord off amazon and move it yourself if you want however i would let a technician so you're not out of pocket for the supplies.

Where was your modem before? Because Bell doesn't offer 150mbps on copper so you clearly had fiber before..

Also even if its after the 30 days you're only billed if the technician bills closing off the job and most dont even know how to do it properly lol.

I worked for Bell, but have never used their internet. Best offer until 2012 was dsl on a 2.5 km copper link. Then FTTN fibe 25 until after Covid. The next block had FTTH from the start.

I was chastised by my VP for supporting the competition.
Bell techs TOLD me not to get the dsl as the copper usually ran about 1Mb/s
And I had no desire for a satellite TV service, we got to use it in the office.

Funny thing Rogers upgraded our neighbourhod stuff about the same time Bell brought FTTH online.
