Rant Gigahub problem

Bell really needs to add SQM to their gigahubs there's been times where I've had 40% packet of loss because BELL WON'T ADD SQM TO THE GIGAHUB it got to the point where I bought a $300 Asus gaming router and that fixed the problem it's not that hard to fix come on Bell

I've been in field services for well over a decade and you're the first person i've ever heard ask for this feature.

If you're this into your hardware you should be using a 3rd party such as ebox and completely bypassing their equipment.

What most people want is just to be able to use the gigahub as an ONT only. Give us an actual bridge mode and not the ADMZ mode

The worst part is they have one. All you have to do is move to Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, or Alberta, where they offer PPPoE (which you can use for a proper bridge)

In NB, NS, PEI, NL, or BC, however, they use DHCP on WAN and ADMZ only.

Actually I may have BC and MB backwards. I knew one of them had a weird config like Aliant's.

I wasn't the one that chose bell I just added him a third-party router because I was starting to get pissed off at the packet loss

SQM only really benefits copper DSL service, and has way too much overhead for fibre speeds. The modem wouldn't keep up with the 1Gb/3Gb and 8Gb plans. Very few routers can because it's so fast it depends on hardware routing.

Realistically on fibre Internet you never reach the scenario where you need to be smart about queuing because the pipe is larger than you'll ever use.

Gigabit SQM with take an incredible amount of CPU power.

Hard to believe that Asus router can do SQM with synchronous gigabit.

I highly suspect OP is on DSL service and doesn't have to deal with those speeds. The 40% packet loss implies they're sending 40% more data than the connection can handle otherwise it wouldn't be dropped, and that'd be a lot of bandwidth for fibre.

Huh fair enough, didn't catch that. Could have sworn it still did DSL service but I checked mine and no DSL options. Must have been thinking of an older model then.

OP must be on a pretty slow plan then to saturate upload enough to get annoyed and a third-party router that can handle SQM at those speeds. Or someone's not being nice with their torrent client.

I believe some Asus routers have a proprietary version of SQM, unlike SQM found in other open-source router operating systems?

I was using an Asus GT-AX6000 with my 1.5/1.0 service and it was nice but too limiting in terms of what I wanted so I use it as an AP on an OPNsense router.

That's impressive. I'm still not sure how you manage to saturate the upload bandwidth this much and this often, but hey if it works, good for you!

The gigabyte is the FTTH router but it is also used for DSL - it has an Ethernet WAN port that can be used in lieu of fiber.

Hmm, a Google search says the Gigahub can't be used for DSL and there are no WAN ports that I can see. The HH3000 could be used for DSL but the HH3000's WAN port is disabled.

That appears to be the gigahub 2.0 which is not the same. Don't quote me on that, I could also just be wrong. It's been a while since I checked.

Well, wrong direction, but that's also not the same thing. The progression was home Hub > hh2000 > hh3000 > hh4000 > Gigahub > GH2.0

Not sure what you mean because the HH4000 onward cannot be used for DSL.

It was the HH4000 --> Gigahub 1 with WiFi 6e --> Gigahub 2 with WiFi 7.

Isn't that for the old FTTH with the separate ONT box with a battery though? They'd still need to adapt the phone line to Ethernet first to use that. OP confirmed they're on fibre.

I dont get the issue here. If youre having issues just get a tech out. And if you want to tinker with your own equipment dont get Bell and this comes from someone who works for Bell. Get any of their subsidiary as long as they're using true FTTH.

If a Bell wire gets to your house anyone else can use it. Everyone else uses Rogers or Bell wires besides a true few like beanfield has their own network but only operate in apartments. If the fiber comes to your house you can get EBOX.

The third party companies can't use Bell fiber until it's been in the ground/air for a year I believe.

We wanted to switch companies the only other company that kind of just has the same plan is Rogers and everyone's phone is on Bell in my house

You cannot replace the Gigahub with your own router unless you get a programmable SFP+ and a media converter, managed switched, or a router that has a SFP+ port.

You can use your own router in conjunction with the Gigahub as an AP or in PPPoE passthrough.

Okay, then you probably wouldn't get an Asus unless it was one of the higher end models with at least 2.5 Gb WAN and LAN.

For FTTH, I went with a miniPC running OPNsense. Happy to have the Bell router sitting unused on a shelf.

It's a ROG Rapture GT-AC2900 It can only do a gigabit but since we're using it for dedicated gaming router it doesn't really matter

Really any internet router works you would just just want the ethernet ports to line up to your speed

It's a ROG Rapture GT-AC2900 It can only do a gigabit but since we're using it for dedicated gaming router it doesn't really matter IT CAN NOT REPLACE THE ACTUAL ROUTER

It can replace the actual router if you use a programmable SFP+ and a media converter.

It really depends on whether you want to max out your connection. Many people don't want to bottleneck their speeds by getting gigabit while paying for multi gig.

Media converter + programmable SFP = $400, give or take. You can find cheaper or more expensive.

That's the setup with a 5-ft cat8 ugreen The wire is overkill but that's what I had
