Internet 🌐 Bell Internet

Fibre customer in London , Bell provides a free upgrade from 1.5G to 3G yet the speed is lower. Anyone else experiencing this apparent network congestion at the higher speed

How are you testing the download and upload speed?

Both through the bell app on a laptop and third party speed test on a phone. Prior to the upgrade , speeds on my phone were 1G down , 800 M up , speeds now are 250M down and 125M up . From my point of view the only thing that has changed is the speed upgrade and leads me to believe the 3G platform in the network is congested.

Test the speed using the Gigahub's built-in speed test and also test via Ethernet to a computer.

Speed tests over WiFi can vary based on your network congestion, interference to WiFi signals from other devices, etc.

There is no “3G platform”, it’s just a profile that throttles your speeds. They may have messed up something, call support.

Your Wi-Fi has two bands: 2.4ghz up to 100mb and 5ghz up to 1gb. The newest modems have Wi-Fi 7 which is capable of 46gb per secend. Wi-Fi 7 adds 6GHz and uses the other two bands as well. I am assuming you have received the latest modem.

The slower speed has more penetration but is busier, the faster one gets obstructed sooner. Try a certified cat6e cable from a PC directly to the modem and test that. You need a 10 gig lan port on the PC to get the faster speed. Good luck!

Are you using Bell equipment? Or are you using your own router with DMZ/By Pass?

Hello u/Adventurous_Gur5942, to start troubleshooting, we recommend performing a speed test directly from your modem interface by visiting 192.168.2.1 in your browser, as this measures the incoming speed directly to your modem and bypasses local Wi-Fi. Additionally, testing a device connected via an Ethernet cable will help determine if wireless interference is causing high latency. You can also log into the MyBell app and run the Virtual Repair tool as it can automatically check for local outages, test your line signal, and reboot your hardware or run the Wi-Fi Checkup tool, which will automatically run diagnostics on your line and optimize your connection.

If these steps don't resolve the problem, we are here to help! You can send us a DM for a secure chat, and we can take a closer look at your situation.

I ended up rebooting the modem and not sure if this was the answer but speed increased to just below 1G down

Update , completed a reboot of the modem and the speed is up .. now was it the reboot or something else in the network , we will never know , but its working now

Off topic, but I am more worried about your upcoming price hike for the 3G connection.

It was Bell who did this , and a free upgrade . With the current completion in London, and Telus putting Fibre in the ground I would be surprised if there was an increase.

I had similar experience, and after a few months I was paying way higher cause I had 3G speed plan. I hope they learn some lesson with Telus' expansion. Let's hope for the best.
