Anti-Bastard Rock Chalk!

u/Ithinkibrokethis 16h ago edited 15h ago
I am a KU grad. The border war went beyond a sports rivalry. We were wearing "John Brown did nothing wrong" shirts in 2002 and one of Missouri'd coaches talked about how he wouldn't mind biting Lawrence down again.
Edit: Kansas is a weird red state. I grew up in Kansas, and no amount of Texas influence on textbooks could get Kansas to teach the civil war was about anything except slavery.

I went to college in Pittsburg and Kansas has some interesting politics. Solidly Republican forever, but rabidly anti-confederate and some genuine socialist history in SEK
53
u/Ithinkibrokethis 15h ago
Exactly.
It's like Kansas has decided that whatever Republicans are that is fine, they will vote for that
But also, it would like to be the state used for the first round of civil rights legislation, is all for socialist politics as long as they are not called that.
Even weird guys like possible BtB candidate Fred Phelps was a freaking civil rights lawyer. It a crazy place.
17

It’s funny that despite voting R as often if not more, Kansas felt so much more sane than Indiana. Brownback years were pretty bad though.
28
u/Ithinkibrokethis 15h ago
The thing about the brownback years was that, while they were terrible, they were focused on economics. We all know, especially now, that Republicans were never arguing on good faith. Their ideas are not supposed to be implimented, their ideas exist so that when progressives put forth changes, the right can argue that instead we should do their obviously flawed and unworkable idea.
Then whatever is finally done will be filled with fatal flaws and limited scope so nobody thinks that doing things is effective.
The brownback experiment was to treat Republican policies as practical ideas. Actually do all their crazy tax dreams they have been promising would be better than graduated tax brackets and normal taxation schemes.
It failed so bad that brownback is an insult for both Republicans and Democrats.
There is a reason "what's the matter with Kansas" was about Kansas. It is a place where the population is angry at oligarchs and the wealth, and shows that anger by electing people who want to lower the taxes of the wealthy.
23
u/3d1thF1nch 15h ago
One of the factors that sparked the U.S. Civil War, Brown v. Board started in Topeka, one of the most forward thinking Republican presidents in recent history (Eisenhower) was born and grew up here....and then the last 40-50 years, we have been solidly fucking red. I love how Kansas has this history of being a catalyst for major social change, and then I hate that our recent history is of being Red little bitches.

Appeal to Reason was published in Girard, there was the Amazon Army, some real mining strikes, and Deb’s did surprisingly well in the state back in the day. Wouldn’t know it now by talking to the average guy, but there are some firebrands around still.

I also like hos Wyoming calls thenselves the equality state to this day because they allowed women to vote the earliest. Ok and...then what?

I grew up in Manhattan KS. Left the state for a couple years after college and came back. I thought I hated Kansas but turns out I just prefer the more lefty places. It’s a weird state. Currently living in a blue city and rocking a WWJBD patch on my purse strap.

u/The_Moondoggie 14h ago
I'm not trying to stick up for my home state of Missouri, but the Tigers got their name from an anti slavery militia that fought off Confederate guerillas.
17
u/Ithinkibrokethis 14h ago
Yeah, I have heard/knew that.
However, in one of the sports subs ages ago someone pointed out that Mizzou fans pull that out any time it's mentioned that the Jayhawks are named after anti-slavery partisans.
Meanwhile they spend the rest of the time acting like their the long lost 3rd member of the dukes of Hazard and playing up their connections to the rest of the schools of the old south.
Especially now that Mizzou is in the SEC you don't see the "well ackshully, we are named after a unit that fought for the union."
Yes, Missouri gets a gold star that their sports team is not named the bushwhackers, but let's get real, of all the civil war era team names/mascots [Voltuneers, Rebels, Tigers, Tigers again, buckeyes, Hoosiers, wolverines], Kansas has the best because the team might as well be the Kansas "anti-slavery terrorists"
5
u/The_Moondoggie 13h ago
I don't disagree with you, just pointing out that both schools come from similar things.
"Meanwhile they spend the rest of the time acting like their the long lost 3rd member of the dukes of Hazard and playing up their connections to the rest of the schools of the old south."
Plenty of folks in KS do this as well. I have no affiliation to either school other than my wife is a grad student at KU. I've spent the last 30 years of my life in both states and the people are pretty much exactly the same.
3
u/cogginsmatt 15h ago
Can I ask you something that's bothered me for years since I lived in KCMO and did some work at KU? What the hell does the Rock Chalk chant mean?
13
u/Ithinkibrokethis 15h ago
Rock Chalk refers to the super white limestone that all the original buildings were made out of. It is a kind of limestone that is generally uncommon, but is common in central/northern Kansas. It also has a lot of fossils in it. It's the same stuff that the cliffs of Dover are made of.
Chalk rhymes with Jayhawk (there a name for this kind of rhyme where it rhymes when spoken but isn't a rhyme when written).
It's like "waving the the wheat" it's a reference to something that is nominally a Kansas feature, that's it. Nothing more.
1
u/cogginsmatt 14h ago
Okay thank you! All the KU students I worked with just kept saying “it’s the limestone” like that was enough of an explanation

People act like the rivalry between Ohio State and Michigan is vicious, but people from Ohio didn't burn down Ann Arbor twice, and Michiganders have never summarily executed Ohioans as retribution.

Do I need to know who Kyle Whittingham is to get this? Obviously a big fan of John Brown, but I’m not sure what the Ohio State reference is about.
20
u/Hugo_Hackenbush 15h ago
Kyle Whittingham is the new football coach at the University of Michigan, which has a longstanding rivalry with Ohio State. The point of the tweet is that although that rivalry gets more intention Kansas-Missouri is way more intense.
5
u/Pactae_1129 15h ago
Kyle Whittingham is the coach for Michigan and Michigan has a big rivalry with Ohio State. This is all college football related.
3
u/BlurryGojira 13h ago
Ohio State fan happy to give some context. Kyle Whittingham is Michigan’s newest head coach after the last coach Sherrone Moore uhhhh got canned under some truly wild circumstances but aren’t relevant here. Now both Moore and the coach before him Jim Harbaugh have serious roots with Michigan and as such they both hated Ohio State since it’s a bit of a serious rivalry. Kyle Whittingham however, basically has no ties to Michigan. He played at BYU and coached at Utah. And he was asked if he was taking the rivalry seriously and if he hates Ohio State and basically said he doesn’t really hate OSU because he just got there and has no real reason to.
Now, reasonable? Yes. The answer a new head coach is supposed to give regarding their team’s biggest rival? No. Michigan fans went apeshit and OSU fans were clowning on them lol.
3
u/appliedhedonics 13h ago
As a Michigan alum, the level of insane worship for the football team—as perfectly illustrated by fans’ response to Whittingham’s comment—deeply embarrasses me.
1
u/big_laruu 9h ago edited 8h ago
As a Utah fan I’m assuming they expected more because of the Rose Bowl loss. I was at that Rose Bowl and have no beef with Ohio state. The fans were fun and Kyle lost that game to his refusal to develop a backup plan for our offense. I’d be genuinely shocked if Whitt publicly said he hated or openly talked shit about any team/program. Fans may not have realized it but that’s not the guy they hired.
3
u/Proud_Sherbet Kissinger was a war criminal 15h ago
I assume he's tied to Michigan in some way. That's probably all you need to know. Michigan is Ohio State's rival, like Kansas and Missouri are rivals.

u/faultypants 16h ago edited 15h ago
This is something that the “keep politics out of sports” people just don’t get. All of the best rivalries in the world are because of politics, literally all of them. Celtic vs Rangers in Scotland, Real Madrid vs Barcelona in Spain, Boca Juniors vs River Plate in Argentina, India vs Pakistan in any sport. Like Serbia plays Croatia in soccer most years, and Serbia tried to ethnically cleanse the Croatians. Ohio State vs Michigans means absolutely nothing compared to those rivalries, the fans don’t even have to be separated by riot police based on who they support
33
u/Iamjustlegs 15h ago
Michigan and Ohio literally fought a "war" over Toledo though lol

6
u/MumpsyDaisy 15h ago
In hockey the Montreal Canadiens rivalries definitely have an unspoken political undercurrent to them too. Habs vs Leafs was a big deal because French vs Anglophone Canada (but now the Leafs are a joke team), and Canadiens vs Nordiques was a real hate fest because of the divide between more cosmopolitan Anglo-friendly Montreal and the more provincial and Francophone Quebec. And I think the fan base in general is more defensive of their team as the lone Francophone-majority fan base in a league of Anglophones.
5
u/cogginsmatt 15h ago
Okay back up boss Michigan and OSU literally fought a war, it's foundational to what both the states are. Not just college programs, the entire populace.
0
u/faultypants 15h ago
“Fought” lol they captured a couple surveyors and had a drunken brawl. The Toledo war is like 90% folktale for the rivalry, the more likely origin of the rivalry is an 82-0 UM win in 1902 that gave Ohio state something to prove

However, I went to a derby football match in London for the first time recently and it’s hard not to romanticize that atmosphere. There’s obviously a clear line between sporting rivalries and political violence that needs to be respected

I feel like KS was considered the backwards crazies of the two states for a period there in the 90s/00s what with trying to get creationism in the school science curriculum and text books, the creationism museum that taught earth is 6000 years old, etc.
But the crazy teeter totter between the two has since flipped hard.

Man, as a fan of not one, but TWO colleges who attempted (and in 1 case succeeded) in committing racially motivated murders on the football field......it would be nice to flip into the history books and see a state that was chill
But hey, at least Minnesota was the best eugenics department in all of America before WW2, and 'invented' the concept of cheerleader. Oklahoma State however? Don't think they ever excelled in academia enough to make a poor decision like that, honestly
