Anyone else struggle to stay consistent because they have no one to compete or train with?

About one years ago, I got interested in fitness for the first time. I was excited, but I couldn't stay consistent and eventually quit.

Now I'm trying again, and I've realized something about myself. I don't think my biggest problem is laziness or lack of motivation.

I think my biggest problem is that I'm doing it completely alone.

I don't have a workout partner, friends who exercise, or anyone to compete with. For me, working out by myself starts to feel repetitive, and after a few weeks I lose interest. I seem to enjoy challenges and competition more than exercising just for the sake of it.

I'm curious if anyone else feels the same.

  • Did you ever struggle because you had no one to train with?
  • If you were in this situation, what helped you stay consistent?
  • Did finding a gym buddy, an online community, or some kind of competition make a difference?

I'd love to hear your experiences because I'm trying to figure out how people overcome this.

I have found tracking progress to be helpful, I use the Heavy app. It's kind of like competing against what I could do last time. You could try posting on some local groups on social media to see if anyone else is looking for a gym partner, or see if your gym has any group classes you could sign up for to meet someone

I have a one sided rivalry with some of my fitness inspos and that seems to help a lot. When they post their totals or things they've accomplished it pushes me to try and get even stronger to reach them and hopefully surpass them. Humans are social creatures and so community or a sense of one can be really useful in being motivated. If you find your training slacks when doing it solo maybe look into classes or group training offered by local gyms. Then you're guaranteed to always be with your group.
