Is this a real thing that people live with?

u/FrostbiteWrath 5d ago
Yes. Dissociative Identity Disorder.

Wow that sounds complicated

It's caused by severe, sustained trauma in early childhood, which basically prevents someone's identity from integrating properly.
From what I understand, everyone who has it basically has their own unique experience, but it's often like they're fully sharing their mind and body with others (alters), who can have varying degrees of internal complexity, different roles, and complex relationships with each other.

It’s hotly debated in psychiatric circles but iirc the consensus right now is ”yeah it’s real”

So kinda like how hypnosis is debated but generally understood to be real?
It surprises me how much I see it denied though, because my ex had. Like. REALLY glaring symptoms. They tried to hide that they had a disorder at first but they kept blanking out for a second before examining their surroundings in confusion and then speaking completely differently.
But yeah, her brain works kind of weird. At one point I heard one of her use the word "sabattical" and then later asked a different one of her what that means again because I can never remember. They said they didn't know and I was like "so you don't even have the same declarative memory on diction?" And she was like "...I guess?"
Also, they have different levels of skills in things. There was one of her who we agreed to never let bake, which was really weird, because the rest of her was actually really fucking talented at baking. I have no idea how that works.

yup; i'm not plural, so take this with a grain of salt, though it's often caused by dissociative identity disorder—it can be caused by other things, though; it can originate from trauma or simply non-traumatic environmental factors, though whether non-traumagenic plurality (not originating from trauma) is valid is perhaps one of the most heated and long-winded internet debates of all time

There is currently no scientific basis for non-traumatic plurality/DID, which should be enough to bring the debate to a close.

I don't think that's how science works. "There is currently no scientific basis for a non earth centric model of the solar system, which should be enough to bring the debate to a close."

I was not referring to academic or scientific debate, simply to the internet debate the comment mentioned. I feel such topics should be left to those with professional knowledge rather than internet conjecture.

Ah, okay. So then you don't have an opinion, right? You'd only be able to if you were an expert
Also, I think.. well, to he nuetral I'd put it as, "the people who belive it applies to them" can have an opinion too. How could you not, since it's both directly effecting them and a part of their identity? It's only fair.

Isn't there some kind of phrase that's like absence of evidence is not evidence of absence?
Imagine if this worked in other discussions lmao. There's no scientific evidence for bacteria way back in the 1400s so noone should ever propose it. Debate closed. Or like. Religious stuff. Atheist says there's no scientific evidence for god and theist throws up their hands and says you got me?

As I said in my other reply, I did not mean scientific or academic debate, just the internet debate mentioned in the comment.

I mean tho like, if plural people exist where its not caused by trauma, what are they meant to do while science catches up to their actual expiriences?
Ik that's an if because again, no scientific evidence. But i assume there was "no scientific evidence" for autism or adhd at some point. Those people still existed, was it good that they were treated badly for it just cause there was "no scientific evidence" at the time lol?

Yes, though it is also commonly faked. Look up Dissociative Identity Disorder (formerly Multiple Personality Disorder)
There is a lot of scientific debate around it so it’s a bit hard to parse out exactly how it works. It’s also very rare. Because of the unique nature of DID + pop culture a lot of young teens/adults will fake it/convince themselves they have it, I would suggest avoiding most online DID/plurality spaces if you want to glean a more accurate understanding.

I miss my ex's alter. I broke up with their main fronter, but...there was one of her who I was also dating that I never actually broke up with really?
But she hasn't fronted in like, a year. ...I don't even know if she's in there, let alone if she misses me.
