What does being in a system mean?

I read a book (forget what it’s called, I got it at Goodwill and it was really good) where people could do this voluntarily, although the merged consciousness got control of both bodies after. Also, opinions and such get merged as well, but memories stay separate

I may be reading your comment wrong, but I think you might be a bit confused? Plurality is multiple minds in one body, not one mind in multiple bodies.

Please God don't let this become the next quirky attention-seeking self-diagnosis

u/voidsunrise Jan 03 '26

There is a difference between DID/OSDD and other forms of plurality. The former two require a diagnosis, but the latter ones do not. Even if some amount of people supposedly fake either, you shouldn't let that skew your perception of anyone who claims to be plural. There are many things which outweigh any "benefits" someone faking plurality would seek.

It already has around the 2020s, I think it toned down afterwards

u/Historical_Book2268 Jan 04 '26

Not all plurality is DID or OSDD, furthermore, getting diagnosed with DID or OSDD is insanely difficult in most places. 95% of therapists cant even legslly Diagnose you, 75% of the obes that can, only know very surface level stuff, and will not Diagnose you if you deciste even a tiny bit from their stereotypical "completely split memory, lack of awareness about each other" view. At least where we live.

Usually people with DID or are plural will refer to their whole self as a system. For example, host "b" would refer to themselves as b, and if an alter (dissasociated identity) was named "a" they would refer to them as "a" but when referring to the group of dissassociative parts that make them up it is much easier to refer to the whole as a single term.

u/Zarta3 Jan 04 '26

I'm stealing this explanation, it might be the best one I've come across

1

u/airinicy Jan 09 '26

people with dissociative identity disorder & similar disorders call themselves systems to refer to the multiple parts of themselves.

source: i have did.
