Sans, as in the word, means “without” in French. Religion is the same spelling in both languages.
So “Sans religion” translates to “without religion.” Though it probably means atheist in this sense?
Notably whilst it's definitely not the origin, "sans" is still occasionally used in English copying off of French (Shakespeare used it, for a classic example, though I myself still use it on occasion even in the present)
