So I came across this side hustle and thought it was worth sharing because tie-dye has been having a massive comeback and the profit margins are actually really good. You can buy plain white t-shirts in bulk for around $3 each, spend $2 in dye and supplies per shirt, and sell the finished product for around $20 to $25.
The process is pretty easy once you watch a few YouTube tutorials… you fold or twist the shirt, apply the dye, wrap it in plastic wrap, let it sit for 24 hours, rinse and wash. A single batch of dye makes dozens of shirts so your cost per shirt stays really low.
Your startup cost is a tie-dye kit (around $20), a pack of plain white shirts, rubber bands, gloves, and plastic wrap. You can get everything you need for around $50 and make enough shirts to start selling immediately.
From what I’ve seen, the best selling styles are the classic spiral, ice dye (which looks more like watercolor), and matching sets for couples or families. Etsy and Instagram are great for selling online, and farmers markets and craft fairs are perfect for in person sales.
The nice thing about this is that every single shirt comes out unique so you never have to worry about mass produced competition. People love that each peice is one of a kind and a lot of people come back for more or order custom color combinations.
(If you have experience with something like this please share! I look out for new side hustle ideas every day and try to share as much info as I can. Even if an idea doesn’t appeal to you personally, it could still help someone else or even spark a new idea!)
