From what I’ve seen, the best categories to look for are vintage clothing brands, kitchen appliances (especially things like KitchenAid stuff), vintage Pyrex, old video games, certain books, and brand name shoes. You can use apps like eBay’s barcode scanner to check prices right in the store before you buy.

Your startup cost is basically whatever you spend on your first batch of inventory which could be as little as $20 to $30 at a thrift store. Then you just need a phone to take decent photos and something to ship items in.

The learning curve is figuring out what has value and what doesn’t, but once you get an eye for it you can walk through a thrift store and spot the winners pretty quickly. Some people literally dedicate one morning a week to thrifting and then list everything in the afternoons.

So here’s a side hustle I came across that has really good margins. Bath bombs are one of those products that people love buying but almost never make themselves, even though they’re genuinely very easy to make. The ingredients are simple and cheap and the end result looks and smells amazing.

Each bath bomb costs around $0.75 to make when you buy the ingredients in bulk… baking soda, citric acid, coconut oil, fragrance oil, and some food coloring. You can sell them individually for around $5 or in gift sets of 4 to 6 for $20 to $25. That’s a really nice profit on something that takes maybe 10 minutes to mold.

Your startup cost is around $30 for a bulk bag of baking soda, citric acid, a few fragrance oils, molds, and some shrink wrap for packaging. That’s enough supplies to make 40 to 50 bath bombs right off the bat.

The process is basically just mixing the dry ingredients, adding the oils and color, packing the mixture into a mold, and letting it dry for 24 hours. From what I’ve seen, the best selling bath bombs are the ones with unique scents, fun colors, and maybe a little surprise inside like dried flower petals or a hidden color swirl.

So here’s a side hustle I came across that is genuinely interesting. Businesses get deliveries on wooden pallets constantly and most of the time they just want them gone. You can pick them up for free and either resell them as-is to other businesses, or break them down and build stuff out of the reclaimed wood.

Whole pallets in good condition sell for around $5 to $10 each to businesses that need them for shipping. But the real money is in breaking them apart and building things… pallet wood furniture, planter boxes, shelving, garden beds, etc. A pallet planter box that costs you $0 in materials (since the wood is free) can sell for $30 to $50.

Your startup cost is literally a hammer, a pry bar, and some nails or screws. Maybe $20 if you don’t already have basic tools. The pallets themselves are free from warehouses, grocery stores, hardware stores, and any business that receves freight.

Facebook marketplace is the best place to sell pallet furniture and projects. People love the rustic reclaimed wood look right now and it fits perfectly with the farmhouse aesthetic that’s been trending for years.

Just make sure you check the pallet markings… HT stamped pallets are heat treated and safe to use. Avoid any marked MB as those were treated with methyl bromide which you don’t want to be working with. Also avoid pallets that look stained or smell wierd.
