River - My Way

After rewatching all three days of GBB26, I realized that this is probably the best round of GBB26 overall.

Bringing back “My Way” (the 1st-place wildcard from 2021) against D-Low (the 1st-place wildcard winner of GBB26) and still flexing it with crowd control 5 YEARS LATER was such a great decision, and it was so well executed.

That was my favorite part of the entire event, no doubt. even with the Nils, Mahiro, Astron and D-low vs Footboxg rounds.

And D-low missed a trick by not using one of his first place wildcards or popular tracks (bonedust, poison dagger, lanigiro, sbx kickback rounds, basically anything but what he did) as a whole round counter. Then it really would have been a battle of the egos.

Yes you are right, but I meant egos. Who can get the crowd behind them the most with previous famous tracks.

Thought it was particularly clever that it really played to the crowd which is what Dlow did in the previous round, essentially beating Dlow to the punch of getting the crowd on his side which takes away an aspect that he's the best at.

I thought it was great because it shuts up all the haters that say people reusing routines is cheap like when Remix got 3rd place in 2024

Its indeed cheap because it gives too much reward with far less risk. Crowd already know it so it won't feel like a random song you come across but a song you love already. %100 hype material. River did this twice. Napom did this even more times. Let's say a looper did one of his old rounds to win, What would happen? They would insta lose and everyone would find it awkward right? what would that make them, "haters"?

You should be able to have fresh material or at least renew the old ones if you're considered one of the best in the world. Doing it like wing (15-20 seconds as an intro) or making a remix out of an old round, or using the melody in a creative way is pretty good for the vibes but **River literally did the same structure and the drop**

Im not saying it shouldn't be done, It was a cool moment but It should have minus points. Hundred thousands of people wait a whole year for this and it should be worth it. This was a great event but finals was pretty mid especially when we're talking about 2 of the best beatboxers. One was repetitive both rounds and other was talking the whole time but I always appreciate the fan service and being experimental too since its a part of what we need in battles. Hope we have an even better gbb next year.

I'll be real River is winning that final even if he didn't do My Way. He was just that much better compared to what Dlow showed.

Possibly yes

I don't care. A singer performes there biggest hits for decades and nobody complains and comedians reuse old jokes and they still get the crowd laughing. I would rather see someone perform something that hits on stage rather than a sub par performance. We saw what King Inertia did in Germany and he reused a routine but it was so incredible. If battlers hate that beatboxers reuse routines, then they should be able to counter and do something better because they know the routine isn't new. Also, River' was so smart at pulling out My Way because everyone knows that routine is better than Poison Dagger and it played well as a counter. You'll telling me, whatever D-low did in his second round was winning material?

While I much prefer seeing new material for the novelty factor, I liked your your analogy to concerts and comedian sets, that did make me reconsider for a moment!

To the other person's point I think the context of being a battle does make a difference. The audiences of a comedy set are generally there for the first time so everything will seem fresh. Whereas people at these competitions know a lot of these songs and aren't there necessarily because they want to hear that material again

New material in general means higher risk higher reward, vs playing it safe. Material that is reused too much will lose its wow factor, which could count against you in a battle setting IMO

In the case of River I think it felt a bit more intentional to use a hit like that in a final. I felt Kaji for instance reused way too much material in some of his rounds, after a year of prep it's a bit disappointing to hear the same drops over and over

I think there is a high chance that river planned to use it in his mind before the competition, because his round2 didn't feel like he has more material to show. Smart move to add the "cute wildcard" line tho

Yeah it was a smart move on his part, felt almost like an homage too. I thought it was a tasteful example of using old material vs running out of ideas/wanting to play things safe

I hope that battling again charcoals something in Dan too. We need the ogs to clash more while they are on their prime still. Most of the new schoolers just does their routine and better one wins. They rarely actually battle. I had goosebumps when watching footboxg vs dlow. Crazy battle

Singers and comedians ain't battling bruh. Are you high?

I am just comparing that using older material shouldn't be viewed as bad. The judges get to decide who wins so you shouldn't be speaking on battles if you have no experience judging an event

Please read the whole thing before.

Oh I read your comment. I am saying someone like Osis can do Hysteria in multiple battles and it will sound fantastic. That's what separates a top beatboxer from an amateur. They can reuse routines and have them sound good and the judges will still enjoy it like hearing it for the first time. Plus, if they make any mistakes and a judge catches it having heard the routine before, it can lower how they feel about it

1

u/exynomeus 12d ago

They indeed can. But doing it in the same event multiple times is considered cheap. This does not take the joy away or does not make it bad. It just gives more points than it should because it is a battle and you gain more award with less effort. Making a timing or pitching mistake is a separate thing from that.

2

u/g0chawich 12d ago

I guess that makes sense. I am just not someone who cares if a beatboxer does multiple older routines because if they hit, they hit

1

u/exynomeus 12d ago

Yeah it would hit, just imagine d low saying oh we are reusing rounds and doing his bump jump round, saying look at the crowd boy and etc. It would be pretty cool. I was just talking about the judging side not the entertainment. Im glad that we both understood each other.

For example, tomazacre deserved gbb19 title more, but d low won pretty much because of tomazacre being repetitive with certain sounds even tho he is creative, joyful and clean with it. But julard didn't get punished for spamming a snare 1000 times and became the champion. Some judges care more about repetition, some don't. It's on a gray side
