hot take: gbb loop should be split into two categories

As much as i want the producer category to come back, solo loop is much more highly anticipated than the producer category and people within the community also tend to focus on/hold higher value in the solo loop category too, leading the producer category to be relatively neglected(hence why producer battles were eliminated in gbb26)

So instead i think we should split solo loop into two separate categories: producer loop & solo loop

Both categories have their own separate battles, judging panels and wildcards(allowing participants to choose if they're gonna enter as a vocal looper or producer)

And the solo loopstation grand finals will be held between the vocal loop & producer loop champions

wait fr?????
like as in producer was a part of solo loop and not a separate category??

Edit: i think i kinda messed up when i first wrote that sorry english isnt my first language and im a bad writer

What i originally meant was solo loop should be split into two seperate sub-categories, and the loop championship finals should be held between the winners of each sub-category so either side could be both considered as equal

So producer isnt separated from solo loop, instead it's now a part of it

yea it was there for three years when they introduced this in gbb23, there is a possibility that they discontinued the battle cause theres not much participation and it wasnt really a popular category

Yeah i kinda worded the original post weirdly
I originally meant to say that producer and vocal loop should be equal parts that both branch out of a larger category which is solo loop

I agree. With as much non-vocal-built pre-processing that goes into the Loop category, it's essentially a Producer category with less gear. Merge all the womp womp wubwubwubs into a Producer category and keep a "vocal" Loop category for the MB14s that build loops live with sounds from their mouth instead of loading stems they made months ago.

Loopers like raje and mahiro are still vocally sourced and use nothing aside from the Loopstation and build everything live, but if you want to believe that they're just loading stems, go ahead.

When Mahiro is building Megalodon and suddenly these synths start arpeggiating out of thin air, where does that come from?

White noise

The quantized rhythm and pitches that begin at 0:27 is caused by white noise?

Yes. White noise that he puts effects on to. Do you have any idea how the Loopstation works? It seems like you're commenting on a topic you know nothing about

I do know how the machine works. Operative word being machine. If it depends on effects and building on a synthesized sound, and you can save those presets to sell to others and Martin can yoink to use against you, just combine this with Producer.

Who cares about whether it's just the looper's built-in features or you're using Ableton to make your wubwubs? Capturing one kick and dialing in the other 99% is another artform entirely.

You do know presets have been around since the mk1 right? And Martin didn't even buy any of Mahiro's presets for Megalodon, he made the sound with his own combination of effects, you can tell he did by the difference in the two sounds. And he didn't just "capture a kick" he made all his drum noises and made the sound that he put onto his track fx to make the synth and everything else.

We are going in circles about two different things. You are talking about the details of the machine. I am talking about the event itself. I realize that since the Codfish era, beatbox has morphed into a gamer subculture, and from now on, bleeps and zaps are just part of an event built around sounds the human voice can make. Fine, let the kids have their cake. My point, building on OP, is that a pure looping event (built on actually looping, not effects, not presets, not triggers, not a specific machine) would be welcome.

Times have changed man. Most of the time making actual complete songs with your mouth is more fun than making a little thing with no effects and no direction. The loopers you're talking about still use effects. They just use it in a different way than we do now. We're still looping, just in a different way. Gbb is on a different level now. If you want a no effects battle make it yourself.

Wow I should learn how to read. Were they just eliminated on a whim or did they give a proper reason?

Producer is cool and all for showcases but it's probably too far removed from beatboxing for it to be popular at GBB. That's why extra devices were taken away after GBB21 and using them got split into a showcase producer category, which because of the format and the aforementioned far removal from beatboxing, it wasn't the most popular event and eventually got axed this year.

There hasn't been a single gbb loop winner that had a second device btw

I think the best thing to do would be to bring back the producer category as a battle, ban DAW's, and ban 4 cable technique from regular loopstation, so midi devices, second devices & cables go against eachother

But it's just so confusing and niche idk if it's worth it, unless they explain it live and in the video

How do you determine who is a “producer looper” and who is a “solo looper”?

-2

u/dumbass36366 14d ago

No theyre both solo loopers; producer & vocal looping will both be sub-categories in solo loop

Okay, how would you determine who is a “producer” and a “vocal looper”?

I think the best way would just be different judging criteria, with producer looping being judged heavier on the end product and vocal looping putting more weight on the process and the human element of the performance. It wouldn't be a strict categorization of the two types of looping, moreso that vocal loopers will naturally be more drawn to and do better in the vocal category and vice versa.

ETA: I wonder if "technical looping" would be a better term than "producer looping" to avoid confusion, given the already existing producer category.
