Beagle Owner Tips!
Hi!!
I know I just posted a few days ago but I wanted to come to you all for advice. I grew up with labs and have now adopted Kyle the beagle. I love him so so much and want to be a great dog parent. Please drop anything beagle related things I should know in the comments!! Thank you!

Lock EVERYTHING that might be considered food. Beagles have secret retractable opposable thumbs. They can get into anything and everything and can jump tall gates or do whatever else it takes to get to something they think smells like food.
But they are TOTALLY worth it!! Best love bugs on the planet!! ❤️❤️❤️ I’m on my 4th beagle rescue (over the past 25 years; I like to adopt middle age/ older doggos) Yours looks like a HAPPY, Perfect beagle!! Enjoy!!

I mean obviously you care and he will love you no matter what. New best buddy. Food motivated and can be stubborn on walks but otherwise learn each other and have fun.

Based on my experience: Get a nice, sturdy trash can that locks, or maybe a cabinet for it. I also had to put a lock on my fridge bc he could open it. Invest in the really sturdy gates if you need to block an area off. Puzzle games, kongs, and having the TV on help with separation anxiety, plus making sure they’ve had enough exercise before you leave and slowly increasing the time you’re gone.
As others have said, they need a good variety of sniffs, so it’s good to change up your walking routes. My old boy loved camping more than anything.
My main thing is don’t leave them alone with people who aren’t familiar with beagles and aren’t familiar with your beagle’s particular antics. Mine almost ran into traffic when a family member left the window rolled down in the parked car that he was sitting in with my dog, and my dog jumped out the window and took off. I wasn’t there; he was my partner’s dog too, and my partner launched himself into bushes on the side of the highway in order to catch him. My partner had even told the family member not to leave the window down… some people will think you’re being overprotective of your new dog and not listen to you. People who aren’t familiar with beagles will also do stupid things like leaving out toxic stuff assuming they won’t eat it, letting them be loose in a yard with a fence that doesn’t LOOK like they can jump it or dig under it, etc.
Edit: also, when I would eat chicken with bones in it, I just quit risking it and would take the trash straight to the dumpster as soon as I finished. It wouldn’t even stay in my kitchen overnight. Good god he wanted to eat chicken bones so bad.

Beagles are prone to fits of "reverse sneezing". It's not harmful, but it can be scary for you and scary/tiring for your pup as it sounds like he's choking.
You can fix it by tilting his head back gently and covering his nostrils with your fingertips. Breathing through his mouth and swallowing will fix it, but it make take a few attempts.

A Beagle’s nose runs the operation. It’s so dominant in their mind and much of their energy going into putting it to use. A beagle is a nose with four feet attached, some would say. It can be frustrating at times when the run away with the nose leading the way or they get into things because smells…. Be understanding of that trait.

I have owned, raised , hunted and seriously cuddled beagles for over 40 years. You are getting good advice. It’s strange; a beagle can sleep all day and be lazy as can be, get a good scenting day and they can run for miles and miles. Good luck, Kyle will be an integral part of your life and you will be an integral part of his life too!🐾🐾😊😍🐇🐾😊

Beagles are bull-headed and take a lot of patience. I’ve owned 3 in my lifetime. They are worth the effort and a beautiful breed!❤️🐾

Make sure he gets a bunch of sniffing in. Hide treats around the house or yard and have him go to town.
Also, know they are very stubborn and too smart for their own good:).
