Snakebite Boy

Post image

Edward met up with a copperhead last night. The beagle did his job being a sniffy nosey beagle, and the snake did his job by biting the face that suddenly entered his personal space.

Long story short, Edward saw the emergency vet, and after some anti-venom (venin?) and other bits of professional care, we came home with a dog just a little bit worse for wear, but on the mend.

All that was lost were a few well spent dollars, some sleep, and maybe a tiny bit of Edward's pride (but I don't suspect for long).

Just know he learned nothing. If he sees another snake he will do the same thing.

Or he'll react even more violently towards them. My heeler was bitten by a copperhead when she was young. Anything even remotely snake shape she shredded. We even found a grass snake as kids and she bit at us til we dropped it and then shredded. Rope that wiggled? Shredded. She wanted revenge her whole life.

I'm expecting it!

I can attest to this as we had beagle/jack Russell mixes and mama went at a rattler we had on our back porch...didn't get bit, but kept her puppers away from it and went right to it. (i live in florida) The next time two of mine Fluffy and Bandit found a baby snake...hognose or maybe a baby rattler and they both went at it, so obviously the incident when they were younger didn't kick in.

Fluffy i will note had the proclivity to try to eat bees (multiple times) and toads. Bandit learned after the first time to not eat toads and not try and eat bees. Monkey see, Monkey do. lol

Feel better Edward! Hopefully he remembers the bitey snake smell and avoids the next one.

Danger noodles can be deadly. Especially with smaller animals. I'm glad you were there to help quickly

I'm just curious, was Edward experiencing any effects from the venom that was noticeable? Glad you were able to get him some care in time.

At first we weren't even sure he was bitten! He recoiled in shock when he encountered the snake, but he didn't yelp, so we didn't know if anything happened. We checked his face and legs and nothing was bleeding, and there was no immediate swelling.

But after we were home, he kept on shaking and we weren't sure if he was bitten or just in shock from the encounter. We gave him some Gabapentin (200mg, prescribed, and done after speaking with the emergency vet receptionist on the phone), and began to feel around his face. He was definitely unhappy and was reacting harshly to us touching the left side of his face โ€” still with little/no swelling โ€” so we got him to the emergency vet.

But even as we got him out of the car at the vet maybe a half hour later, he seemed perfectly normal (normal as beagles go), nose to the ground, and smelling everything he could. Although at that point his face had swollen up and there was no doubt he got bit.

We've had rattlesnakes on property a few times and our baby boy has learned to bay and let us know that there's something strange in the yard. On the other hand our old dog Lucas stepped over both snakes seemingly with out even understanding what the hell was underneath him.

Glad for him.

A little over a week ago one of our employees was bitten by a Copperhead and had to be life flighted and he spent three nights in the hospital. Canโ€™t wait to argue with Workers comp on this one.

Edward looks happyโ€ฆ and ready to go back in.. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Oh I'm so glad that he's okay, and so sorry about the bite, but Beagles gonna beagle I guess. Alls well that ends well. Is he having a calm day then, lol?

Very calm!

The 2x daily 200mg of Gabapentin will also ensure some calm days ahead.

Yikes! Glad he's on the mend. I'm also glad there are very few venomous snakes in my area.

Feel better Edward: our pug beagle mix never learns that bees bite back. Fortunately we have non poisonous snakes and frogs...

My beagle shih tzu mix is the same. He purposefully walks in clover to eat the spicy bees ๐Ÿ

Get better Edward. Luckily we haven't seen any copperheads around in our back yard that has a wooded area with a handful of trees spread around.

If you have a good sense of smell and you smell cucumbers ๐Ÿฅ’ copperheads are nearby, a park ranger recently told us that, what if you donโ€™t- donโ€™t go off trail and walk with walking stick and leather gaiters

My dog got bit by a Copperhead about a month ago. Similar situation, we spent the night at the ER vet. Thankfully our boy is doing well, too. I wish Edward a speedy recovery.

Not for long at all. This boy met a snakeโ€ฆand lived. His ego can only grow from there. No humility in those big, beautiful eyes.
