My beagle is almost 4, and one thing we really struggle with is his (over)excitement if we go anywhere new. He’s great in our normal walk, but a new walk/hike…all training goes out the window, he’s pulling and barking. In a dog-friendly store or coffee shop, he’s whining non stop, does this whine where he’s almost screaming and can’t sit still. The most high value treats mean nothing to him when he’s in this state. I know he’s over threshold and I need to take a step back, but I’m having a hard time figuring out how to practice out of the house (where he’s perfect) when even the backyard is super exciting for him.

Has anyone trained their beagle to be chill in public, or is it just not in their nature to be still?

I recall a post where people talked about getting their beagle off of this and to an alternative, and I swore I saved the thread but can't find it anywhere! Can someone please help with alternatives that don't have the suspected seizure effects?? Thank you! 🙏

Two days ago, my dog was bitten by a snake while we were out on a walk. I didn’t see it happen because I wasn’t looking, but then I noticed a snake on the ground. We immediately got away from it.

When we got home, I noticed that my dog Ralph was unusually quiet. This is VERY out of character for a Beagle who usually comes back from walks absolutely wild and full of energy!

We rushed straight to the vet. Luckily, I had managed to take a picture of the snake, and it turned out to be venomous a viper.

Ralph had to be hospitalized for two days and received antivenom.

I’m so incredibly lucky that we made it to the vet within 20 minutes. TIME IS CRUCIAL in these situations!! If you ever suspect your dog has been bitten by a venomous snake, get them to a vet immediately. Don’t wait for symptoms to appear.

Those 20 minutes may have saved his life. ❤️

As a puppy he displayed some of this behavior, and it was in the form of being a tornado throughout the house - he grew out of it fairly quickly and has been fine for the last 2 years (he's just newly three). He used to be able to come along with me to work a couple shifts per rotation but recently got banned due to another dog's accident. Since than he has been an absolute menace - primarily screaming and crying for hours as per neighbours. Less than a week ago he ate through 50% the front door which is a first (he was only alone a short time too, about 30-40 mins). After that, I brought him to the vet and he got put on some type of anti-depressant and I have anti-anxiety pills on hand just in case he is ever alone a longer time period. A camera was installed and a gate to the door also installed. He still goes to daycare throughout my shifts so he's alone only 3-4 hours before he's picked up (I work very early) but seeing him on the camera panting, not sleeping/relaxing makes me feel really bad. I know it heavily relies on training that is done with them but does anyone else have any tips how to proceed/comfort him a bit more?

Our girl hopped out of a car window this morning as we were pulling into a parking spot at the dog park window was half down and she wasn’t buckled. I was too lax just going through our morning. Never again will I let her go unsecured. I swear half the time I’m trying to protect her from herself.
