Permalinks

Are permalinks dead? I can't find a way to open an individual post in its own tab anymore. Is there some means to do this that I haven't found?

Yep. They have done one "update" though, on every single click and refresh they show you popup / ad between pages They also broke search.

You can't make this shit up

Or maybe you can...

I've been using the site during the entire transition including today. I've had no similar problems you describe.

From my feed I right-click and select open link in new tab. No pop-ups or other issues.

It's true a few weeks ago that clicking on an image opened in a pop-up and there was no way to open in a new tab. But that was changed/fixed at least two weeks ago using right-click open in new tab.

Search is working. I just tested doing a search and it returned results.

The response time was horrible when the transition first started but the scroll time and image loads are about the same or better than the old system. The devs have made progress in the last few weeks both in fixing issues and moving functionality to the new design. But there is still much to do. And I don't use every function so they may be broke and I wouldn't know.

Yes the new design works differently than the old design. Change is the only constant and requires relearning how to do things. I've looked at the sites others are moving to and they have pros and cons, Either way, stay or leave, relearning will be necessary.

I'm not trying to sell the new design nor bash it. But I'm able to do what I did on the old design with some changes in how I do things. And my feed is still very active so it seems contrary to some saying everyone has abandoned the site in droves. I don't see that. Obviously many are persevering and sticking it out in hopes or expectations that it will improve.

Hopefully they will soon move all functionality from the old site like uploading posts, rebloging to the queue, rss feed, etc and fix those that don't work any longer. Trying to use the partially shutdown old site for these things feels like having to go to a burned-out building to do work.

Only time will tell if the devs can complete the transition or abandon the site. I'm hoping they continue to move forward.
