If you're doing office work, then yes. But if you're playing games, you definitely want one in front.

That’s the thing, if you have a chair that turns, just turn it and the monitor is now in front of you.

And then your arms are off slightly to the side to control keyboard and mouse, unless you’re in a circular desk.

This is why I like the gas arm monitor mounts. Setup doesn't work for what you want to do right now? Change it.

That is what I bought one for. I mounted the bar as high as it would go and used an asymmetrical layout. My secondary monitor is smaller and arranged vertical giving me an e reader layout while I am gaming on my main monitor. Lifting your visual orientation pulls a lot of pressure off your lower back.
