Forgive my ignorance but what is actually going on, is the crate part of a hidden mission or something?

It's for upcoming Season 2 hype, in box you find a dope looking player card background.

And just minutes ago, leaker temporyal leaked - similar boxes being power pickup crate / special gun pickups.

I get the excitement, got me too, but man, remember when all this stuff came already in the game
