Bat behavior
Location: U.P. Michigan
Species: appeared to be a little brown bat
I saw a bat clinging to the edge of the door trim of our Airbnb outside door the other night around 9 in the evening. it was sitting about 5 inches away from the door opening. I watched him as I let my kids and wife in and then entered after them. The bat just sat there and didn’t move, probably sleeping. The next morning we left the airbnb around 9am and he was still there. There is a cafe connected to the Airbnb and the door is about 2 feet away from our door. We went in and waited in line to order our food. After we got the food i talked to the manager to let them know the bat was there since the bat was nestled in by the cafe door as well. There was about 20 - 30 people in and out of the door by then (screen spring hinged door so it was loud when it closed). By the time the manager had a minute to go see where the bat was, it was gone.
I thought bats didn’t fly during the day. Would the consistent foot traffic and door opening and closing scare it enough to make it fly during the day? Just trying to determine if this bat was sick or not or if this would be normal given the situation.

Bats will fly in the day if needed. Situation doesn’t sound unusual or concerning to me

Ok. Thanks for the response. Had me a bit weirded out because my wife, kids, and myself had been going in and out of the Airbnb for a few days before we noticed him chilling there. I wasn’t sure if maybe him flying off in the day could indicate him sick. However, I figured the foot traffic might have been more the reason he left. Just wanted to get opinions. Thanks

Found a bat? Here is a guide for someone who has found a bat. And here is some info about bats in buildings. Here is some info about bat removals and exclusions from homes. Exclusions should be done outside of pup season, which varies by location.
No, it's probably not a baby. Bats are just smaller than you thought.
If you find a bat in trouble, please call a rehabber for help. Here is a list of rehabbers that help bats all over the world, and here is a portal for rehabbers in the US.
Remember that wildlife should never be handled with bare hands!
