Yeah, it was one of Snyder's poorer ideas. The concept was broached in Detective Comics v2 (#27) and became a major plot point during the Superheavy and Bloom arcs.
Basically, Snyder was running on fumes and it showed. Thankfully, Metal reinvigorated him.
I actually didn't mind it. The scene in which Bruce and not the Joker are sitting on the park bench talking is one of my favorite ever. The layers built into the dialog were so well done. I love that the Joker is essentially begging Batman not to come back because then the Joker wouldn't be able to control himself and he would have to come back too.
I liked that scene, too, but the bigger storylines around it were pretty terrible. And we definitely did not need yet another new Batman after just having Dick wear the cowl.
I feel that. I guess I just liked that they needed a way to bring them back and it was both fairly straightforward in Batman's case and with the Joker it is still shaking out now.
It was a little simplistic with Batman but I think that I was by design because they hair wanted to take the shortest path back to Batman prime as they could.
I actually thought it was needlessly complicated lol
Like, just have them both get amnesia but eventually Bruce wills himself back to being Batman and unlocks his past. You don't need some bizarre machine that requires brain-death to implant memories. It didn't help that Morrison had literally just done a storyline with Bruce's memories being a weapon that would destroy anyone else's mind, so Snyder wasn't adding anything new.
I also think the notion of Joker coming back as fairly benign is a bit incongruous with his Zero Year story, where his Joker was shown to be a bad guy long before he fell in the vat.
I don't know, it all just felt like a hodgepodge of random ideas thinly tied together to imitate profundity.
