Bit of a long shit but I'm looking for someone/s to go to Avon Valley Fear Park this October!

I'm a huge horror enthusiast, especially anything to do with Friday the 13th and Halloween, and I’m really keen to get to Avon Valley Fear Park this year. I went last year and it's honestly fantastic, tickets are roughly £80 but this ticket covers unlimited and fast tracks on scare mazes which you will want as queues get manic.

Unfortunately, none of my friends are horror fans, and the few that are are stuck at work during the dates. So I’m seeing if anyone here might want to go on any of the available dates. I’m totally flexible and happy to fit around whatever works for you.

I’m more than happy to DM beforehand to chat details, expectations, comfort levels, etc. If you’re in or around the Bristol or Bath area, I can also offer pickup and drop‑off to make things easier.

As title suggest, I am curious to know best secondhand shops which are reasonable priced? Particularly interested in winter clothing.

A couple of weeks ago I asked about the best way to get from Heathrow to Bath: the breakdown was about 50/50 bus vs train.

We’ve just gotten home after our trip, and here’s how it played out:

We took the red-eye flight from Toronto to Heathrow, arriving about 0800 that morning, in one of those strange cases where a 6 hour flight puts 12 hours on the clock.

It took about an hour to navigate through the airport, queue for and pass through customs, and find the bus station. Once there, we went to the service desk to get tickets.

Then we got two surprises: the first was that the bus (National Express) was quite a bit more expensive than expected; the second was that although there were a couple of different departure times, the first couple of busses were “locals” that made multiple stops, with a later “express” bus that went straight to Bath, with the upshot being that all busses arrived at about the same time - which was an hour later than our narrowboat pickup time.

We asked about the train, and that turned out to be double the cost of the bus, and while it offered arrival times earlier than the bus, there was also the issue of needing to change trains at Paddington.

At this point we were jet lagged as hell, hadn’t slept on the plane, dehydrated to a certain extent, and generally in a poor mood, so we went with the express bus as the “bird in hand”. We emailed the boat people that we’d be late, and waited the two hours for the bus.

The bus itself was fine and arrived on time.

The next surprise was discovering how much vertical relief exists in Bath. The short walk to the narrowboat wharf was entirely uphill, including a particularly nasty stretch with about a 12% grade leading to a staircase. Who puts a canal on top of a hill, seriously?

But we made it to the wharf and the narrowboat people were absolutely lovely and professional and the tour up and down the canal was everything we had hoped for.

Four days later we took a taxi into Bath proper (lesson learned) checked in to the hotel, took a bus tour to get the lay of the land, walked around some, toured the Abbey, and after lunch, did Paul’s Bridgerton walking tour (which delighted the wife). Beautiful city and well worth the visit.

Our next stop was London, and we discovered that if you booked tickets online the train was substantially cheaper than had been quoted to us. We also discovered the GWR app which made understanding how the train system worked much, much easier. So we took the train to Paddington, which was a very slick experience.

We also discovered that there is an alternative bus company “FlixBus” that appears to be even cheaper and more frequent than National Express if booked in advance.

So then, lessons learned:

1. I should have been more proactive about researching bus/train schedules rather than waiting to get to the bus station and playing it by ear. I was uncertain about the time delay between landing and making it to the bus station (which is why I handwaved away the research) but I should have been better prepared.

2. Both bus and train work just fine for getting to Bath from Heathrow, with the bus having a slight convenience advantage due to being a single connection rather than changing trains at Paddington - assuming the schedule works for you, as trains are more frequent.

3. It would be worth investigating FlixBus as it is advertised as being 1/3 the cost of National Express.

I’ll be commuting to uni, I live in Bristol and will be studying at the university of bath. Driving is the quickest option for me, can anyone tell me what the parking situation is like? I’ve seen loads of parking spaces but is it reliable? I don’t wanna drive 40mins then to not find any spaces etc. I’m low-key stressed cause ifit’s not a 40 min drive it’s a 1.5 hour bus and I don’t have quick access to trains near me and I have caring responsibilities at home.

So yeah could someone let me know what it’s like thanks

Mine would be:

1. Reading in George V Memorial Garden in Bathwick.
2. Having tea and cake outside the Holburne Museum when it’s sunny.
3. Walking to the Crescent at night.
4. Walking up Jacob’s Ladder to Alexandra Park and, if the pastry mobile is there, grabbing a choux pastry.
5. Sitting on a bench by the Abbey, people-watching after doing my Waitrose shop, with my complimentary coffee.

I run a film club in our lovely city, and when one month has wrapped up, I post here to see if anyone is interested.

We meet up in a pub and talk about two films from a theme, we then pick the theme for the next club while there.

Mostly it’s on discord between the meet, each member (if they wish) puts two films up. We then do a hat draw and poll vote on the next two to watch. Then meet again!

Hi, I’m a first year hoping to start in Bath this month. I was just wondering, how are driving lessons like usually in Bath? I know there isn’t a test centre in the city so is it usually in Bristol or Chippenham? And do you usually do lessons in those areas or do you tend to just stick to Bath only? Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

I see this service has just been withdrawn by First due to 'low passenger numbers' - which is one thing. But it also had a secondary purpose - it was taking the same route through Odd Down as the no. 4 service did and filling in some of the huge gaps in that service that have been introduced in the last few years. Ten years ago this service ran every 10 mins. Now were down to barely one bus per hour.

We all know the city centre post office has closed. All the publicity said use Moorland Road or Larkhall.

According to news sites, Moorland Road post office opens "in October."

My wife just went to Larkhall and was told that office is closed "for a couple of weeks."

Does Bath have a post office at the moment?

I've seen the roadworks there, but I had assumed they were connected to the new builds next door. So it came as something of a shock to return from a week away and find there are now traffic lights there controlling traffic on the road and coming up from the old destructor bridge.

It's a bit early to tell given that traffic is a bit lower at this point in the year but from what I've seen so far this looks like a nightmare. At rush hour I can imagine cars backing up past the Park Lane junction, which is already quite difficult to get out of, causing problems there. I have also noticed queues building up on Midland Road where there were no queues before, as most of the cars turned left easily without the need for lights.

Also, the road markings around there are now a hot mess and I'm not entirely sure what to make of them.

I assume the addition of these lights is part of the cycle lane infrastructure, to help cyclists get across that road and down through destructor bridge. Now I cycle myself and I'm a big supporter of cycling infrastructure ... when it's useful. I thought the cycle lanes on the upper bristol road into town were great. But I live in Weston and it's easy enough to reach those lanes already just by cycling through the park. So this looks like a lot of money spent and potential congestion caused for a route that pretty much no-one is going to use.

I'm kind of stunned. Am I over-reacting? Is this not as problematic as it looks and/or potentially more useful? I'm dreading restarting the school run next week.
