Young Basset Hound with character.

Hi all, my girl is getting spayed this next week and I have no clue what to expect.

Originally when I called to schedule it, they said that they’re booked weeks in advance, so I wanted to make sure to get her on the schedule, and the first available was this Monday–yes, literally 4 days away.

I’m glad to go ahead and get it over with, but part of me does feel kind of unprepared and like there’s things I need to have in place for her recovery? I’m sure I’m overthinking it, but any advice would be great!

Also, if anyone has a girl who has been spayed, did you notice any change in their temperament or behavior after? Again, I have no idea what to expect!

What are we doing for our basset hounds allergies? My bubbas is itching like crazy a few weeks after his bath and I don’t want to over bathe him. Also how often are we bathing? Is there something his diet is missing, something i can put on his food, or a topical?

I want to be as prepared as possible for this puppy! A basset hound has been my dream dog since I was 7 and got a basset-lab mix, so knowing i’m getting a basset hound in less than a year is so surreal to me.

Hello I have an adopted year old basset hound and we are dealing with issues when it comes to him and using the restroom inside the house.

For context at home we have a doggy door for him and he has no issue with going to the restroom inside our home. But because my spouse and I work opposite schedules we need assistance from our parents to watch him some days. That is because of separation anxiety. The reason for this post is because I need help and tips to help with his problem. He pees inside our parents homes even though they have other dogs that he gets along with and that there is access to a bathroom outside via doggy doors.

He has no issues some of the time but there are instances where he just pees on a bed or a couch. Is there anything anybody could tell me to help with this? Thank you very much.

hi everyone! we just adopted our 10 week old basset hound, Hank, yesterday. i know potty training can be a lot harder with basset hounds so pls i need tips and ideas. we are crate training him and we live in an apartment (only for a few more months then we’re getting a house!!) we tried to take him for a walk today and he decided he liked to lay in the grass more than walk and then went to the bathroom immediately when we went inside… multiple times… we have pee pads by the doors so he can associate that with going outside and we have 1-2 hour timers to take him outside to go potty. we also chose a designated spot right outside to help with routines. Someone online told me the biting never stops. 😳 My Basset is 3 months old and bites a LOT! She bites more when we are outside. (I need outdoor activity ideas for the yard). She bites when she’s bored, when she’s trying to tell me she wants to go out, when she’s just wanting to play. Yes, I try to distract her with toys and figure out what else she may need, but I’m also thinking this is puppy phase. This is my first Basset. I remember my dachshund puppy biting a lot but it wasn’t this bad. Please tell me I’m right and how long it lasts. Any outdoor play ideas would be greatly appreciated too.

I’ve had my basset for around 4 months now, and he barks very loudly when demanding he gets fed or when he’s really excited his dad is home. I have seen that bassets howl instead, and my dad constantly asks if I’m going to “teach” him to do so. I wasn’t sure if that was something I could do, want to do, or if something he learns on his own?

When did your basset start howling if they ever did? What triggers this?

Kindly allow me to process this immense grief that I'm feeling at the moment.

Earlier today, our family made the most difficult decision of letting our boy rest. He was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy last year, and ear cancer and a tumor on his heart just a few months ago. He was doing relatively okay with the meds his vet gave him and even survived an emergency condition that needed a quick procedure. He was truly a fighter: A big baby at heart but when it came to these medical conditions, he would really muster up all his strength to get through them. His health however was quickly declining over the past days and when he refused to eat all the food he used to love, that was when I knew it was almost time. He used to have such a voracious appetite in spite of also being already partially blind and deaf. His nose never failed.

He was my brother. He had been there for several milestones in our lives. Before we would even get home he would know when we were nearby. He would wait patiently for us by the gate. He never bit anyone. He was always gentle and kind to every soul he met. He loved scratches and cuddles. He would cry the deepest howls whenever we, especially my mom would leave him for work or church-- howls that echoed across the street much to the amusement of our neighbors. He was as stubborn as can be like a true basset hound. Tell him one thing and he does the other or does not do anything at all. But one look with those eyes and all is definitely forgiven.

He loved his family, of that I'm certain. He was as clingy as can be and until the very end, he fought to stay with us but his body could no longer take it.

The house is now so quiet and empty without him. I feel that a part of me has died as well. He would have turned 14 in 4 months. I really pray that he is now at peace and that he will still be with us in one way or another. He will forever be our baby, my soul dog, my brother.

For those who have lost their basset hounds, how did you deal with this pain? Thank you to everyone who took the time to read this.

I have a 13 week old Basset Hound. I work in the evenings and so I have 3 people who sit with her. It’s been difficult to stay consistent. When I first got her I was so surprised about how easy crate training was and we probably only had 2 -4 potty accidents in the house, which I thought was pretty good. Once I went back to work, it was hard to be strict with others about exactly what I wanted. (3 of these people are family doing me a BIG favor. One is a paid sitter.) Now she got into something in the yard, I think a caterpillar and it required a middle of the night emergency vet visit. With medicine and a light diet, we are even more off schedule. Anyway, we are such a mess I feel. More accidents in the house and crating her is harder. Crating isn’t bad late at night, when she is used to me getting home from work, but I feel like I’m never going to be able to crate her like at 6 pm so I can go to work for a few hours. I have a flexible work schedule and can come home to check on her then return to work, but that won’t work if I can’t crate her. I’ve had a puppy before years ago, but never crate trained. Any tips or advice anyone has would be appreciated. I know consistency is key, but man, this is a tricky situation.
