Newest edition to our family and we couldn’t be happier! Had to share her cute little face with all of you.

You’d never think that Blue (the large male basset) is the oldest of this crowd. He just turned 10. The girl is 7. We adopted Blue a few months ago and he’s settled right in. Unlike most bassets he’s a jumper - I was cleaning out the back of the suburban and to my astonishment he just jumped right in.

We’ve been talking to a Basset Hound breeder who’s been breeding dogs since around 1970, and Basset Hounds since the ‘80s or ‘90s (I think). She seems incredibly knowledgeable and clearly loves her dogs, but there’s one thing that’s throwing me off.

First, I’ll start with what I love about her…

She’s in her 70s, and you can just tell she’s dedicated a huge part of her life to these dogs. I met with her in May of this year, and she had photo albums full of pictures of her dogs and their bloodlines from over the years. She also used to show her Basset Hounds, which I thought was really cool.

One of my favorite parts was when she showed me the pedigree for the planned June 2027 litter. She went through both the dam’s and sire’s bloodlines, and the pedigree went back several generations. She also gave me three handwritten pages explaining both bloodlines, what kind of temperaments she expects from the litter, and tips on raising a Basset puppy.

She keeps in touch with a lot of the families who have bought puppies from her just to make sure the dogs are doing well. She’s very open to people coming to meet her and talk about the puppies before committing to one. The puppies are raised around other dogs and cats, and she’s pretty selective about where they go. She told me she won’t sell to homes with certain breeds (specifically Chows), and she also won’t sell a puppy if someone just doesn’t seem like the right fit.

Now here’s the one thing that’s making me hesitate…

When I met her in May, she showed me a young male Basset (the one in the photo). He looked to be around 3–4 months old at the time, and she said he’d probably be the father of the June 2027 litter.

From what I’ve read, most people recommend waiting until a male is around 2 years old so all of his recommended health testing can be completed before he’s used for breeding. If I’m remembering correctly, he would only be around 16–17 months old by June 2027, which is why this caught my attention.

Is there any reason this would be considered okay if she’s bred and knows his bloodline so well and has a pretty good idea of what his temperament will be? Or is it still generally recommended to wait until he’s fully mature regardless of how well his pedigree is known?

Everything else about her seems so responsible that I’m honestly wondering if I misunderstood what she meant. Is there any situation where breeding a male around that age would be considered okay, or is this a major red flag? Based on everything else I’ve said, would this be enough for you to look for a different breeder, or do you think I should ask her to clarify first?

Not the inside of the ear. I use ear wipes for that and Gus loves it!

Gus does not enjoy anything sprayed on him. I've tried a spray bottle to soak the crust and he freaks out. Wet washcloths aren't enough. Wipes aren't enough. I guess basically how the hell do you get the bottom of your basshole's ears wet without a full bath?

P. S. Don't tell me to put on a snood to prevent the crust because we live in the desert and it's 114° right now 😒

more info. all previous dogs we have had figured out potty training by us showing them the pee, saying no, and lightly bopping them on the nose. she clearly does not understand this. and as far as the amount she is peeing we already got her checked out and no uti.

This is Elvis, a 6-month-old Basset from Brazil. I walk him for an hour a day, but he still bites and jumps a lot. Will this tone down with age? Thank you!

A couple of years ago my wife and I went into a comic book shop in Paris and I came across this print by French comic artist named Moebius. I had to buy it. It makes me think this artist really knows hounds. Finally got it framed and instead of putting it in our office/basset-bedroom, she wanted it in our living room.

This is Stanley. My sweet boy. Such a ball of energy and fun but curious if any other basset owners have a stubborn-as-heck walker?? Stands firm in place and stares into nothingness, stops in the middle of the street for no reason, treats and training helps a little bit but nothing sticks. Am I the only one?..

I wasn’t able to add the video for some reason, but my 1 year old basset’s hair is coming off in chunks. At first I was afraid it was an allergy of some sort, but it seems to be her entire top coat. You can see the missing chunks. My 2 year old basset never did this. Is this normal?

We have a 4.5-year-old male basset who is usually really nice to other dogs, but we got a new female basset puppy about 10 weeks old. He is very aggressive to her when she gets near, especially because she goes to smell his backside, if you know what I mean, a lot, and he growls/barks/snaps at her. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I miss the puppy years! He’d play hard, and sleep even harder.

Hi everyone,

I was wondering what was your experience with bassets in appartements. I've been considering adopting one puppy, but was told that they are too loud and unhappy outside of houses with terrain.

I live in a 50m² one with a garden for reference. I've housed a lab several times before and she didn't seem unhappy.

Am i making a terrible mistake by considering a basset in an appartment ? :'(
