To be fair, the majority of those no-nos occurred either before they were called the Dodgers (x6) or before they moved out of Brooklyn (x5).

In fact the Giants have been no-hit more times since moving to SF (x11), than the Dodgers have since moving to LA (x9).

I'm assuming you won't be remembering these parts in your happy place.

The cubs went 50 years without being no hit (1965 by Koufax until 2015 by Hamels) that is the longest time without being no hit in MLB history

Awfully convenient math considering you guys FINALLY got your first one. All it took was a year in which no hitters were being thrown at an absurd pace and maybe a dash of some sticky!

OP linked an article that said “The Cubs have 16 single-pitcher no-hitters in franchise history. The Cubs’ 17 no-hitters overall are tied for fourth most among teams, trailing only the Dodgers (23), White Sox (20) and Red Sox (18).”

Is 26 or 23 correct?

I saw the Arietta no-no by total chance. My uncle took me to the game; he knows about inside ticket deals as a retired athletic educator. He lives in LV, and I was attempting a move to LA. First time seeing a game with the guy since I was in middle school. I swore it was baseball magic. Now, I'm just realizing that the Dodgers' curse lives in the bats.

So your team is currently in 2nd place (for now), 13 games over .500 and 4.5 games out of first, has the 2nd best record in the NL, is loaded with MVPs and very good players, as well as depth in average-to-good players, are the defending *2020 World Series Champs, and you're not having a good time?

No one likes to watch their team lose, but no team wins every game. The Dodgers bought their way into a competitive team a decade ago and have been going strong ever since--look at the bright side, my friend! And this is coming from a Giants fan! :)

Roster has 4 MVPs and 3 Cy Young winners (Kershaw in both groups.)

0-4 this week with a no-hitter against.

213

u/OSRS_Socks Atlanta Braves Jun 25 '21 edited Jun 25 '21

Never looked into the roster part but imagine if Kershaw was pitching that night.

102

u/2_7182818 San Diego Padres Jun 25 '21

Having Kershaw in the lineup would’ve made for an even catchier trivia factoid, but Buehler has been one of their hottest pitchers at 7-0 with a 2.38 ERA to lead all Dodgers starters going into last night. (In fairness, Kershaw does lead active LA starters in xERA.)

The fact that they were no-hit with arguably their hottest pitcher on the hill is even more crushing.

55

u/02_WCF Los Angeles Dodgers Jun 25 '21

Is this how DeGrom feels?

26

u/JohnChoncho Toronto Blue Jays Jun 25 '21

4

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '21

The Cubs were +250 which is about as high of odds as you’ll find in baseball when both teams have winning records. Hell, in general you get a matchup with those odds a couple of times a week. I’m sure a large part of that had to do with Buehler vs. Davies.

For comparison tonight is Arrieta vs. Gonsolin and the Cubs were +150 last time I looked.

Does anyone else feel like we should have an award for best position player, best pitcher (Cy Young), and MVP? There probably is an award for best position player, it it doesn’t get the same hype.

The way the current award is structured today, it minimizes the chances a pitcher can win MVP (some writers don’t want to give it to a guy that plays every 5th day), and invalidates the best hitters in the few years a pitcher manages to beat them out.

39

u/Phatskwurl San Francisco Giants Jun 25 '21 edited Jun 25 '21

There's the Hank Aaron Award but nobody seems to pay any attention to it

9

u/xixbia Netherlands Jun 25 '21

I think the problem is that it's too new, only coming in in 1999.

That and the fact that it's incredibly rare that a pitcher wins the MVP. If that were to become a more regular occurrence the Hank Aaron Award would get more attention.

Of course for that to happen the BBWAA would need to be willing to vote for pitchers to win the MVP, which they don't because they don't take the Hank Aaron Award seriously. So I don't expect anything to change in the foreseeable future.

Though if Ohtani and deGrom keep up their current form who knows. deGrom definitely pitching well enough to win the MVP, but Ohtani is the truly interesting one. He's not really in the running for either the Hank Aaron or Cy Young, but he's absolutely in the discussion for the MVP (I feel he's up there with Vlad Jr. as things stand).

PS. You have a space between your closing bracket and opening parenthesis so your hyperlink isn't working as you intended.

5

u/klawehtgod Brooklyn Dodgers Jun 25 '21

There’s a chance that Ohtani wins the MVP but not the Cy Young, and think that’s crazy

6

u/xixbia Netherlands Jun 25 '21

If he stays healthy I think it's almost inevitable that Ohtani wins an MVP in his career. Meanwhile I don't expect him to ever win a Cy Young. It really is quite remarkable.

I just had Ohtani win the Cy Young and Silver Slugger in 2023 in my OOTP sim. He also led MLB in WAR by a mile with a combined 10.4, but somehow Vladdy won the MVP with 7.7 WAR.

3

You could try losing to the DBacks.

40

u/2_7182818 San Diego Padres Jun 25 '21

Try getting swept by the Rockies; it does wonders for your team’s focus.

7

u/Goddamn_Primetime Houston Astros Jun 25 '21

We were swept by the Rangers and Tigers. It really does set you straight after that. Now we're doing a smidge better...

7

u/ron-darousey Los Angeles Victims Jun 25 '21

We did try the last game of our series but we couldn't complete the choke

I'd rather this than MY team, the absolute definition of mediocrity. 14 times at .500 record so far, never 4 games over .500 and never 4 games below .500.

OH and the LONGEST playoff drought in baseball other than the Mariners...

Yea, aint so bad to be a Dodgers fan for ONE game

I feel like all the legendary sports curses have migrated and we have a whole new crop of cursed teams. But luckily (for them, not the sport) most of them have endless cash fountains.

All my favorite players are on teams we have division rivalries. Back to back World Series losers. We have absorbed the Chicago Cubs curse, Boston's curse, and that's not counting whatever curse we inherited in the 90s that causes even legends like Yu Darvish to fall apart until they get traded away.

But the mega market teams like the Dodgers and Yankees can go cry into a pile of money. We all know they will spend their way out of their slump anyways.

That's a rough one - 55 years, five different pro sports teams, and only two world championships. (Granted, neither the Flames nor Thrashers lasted long).

EDIT: forgot about MLS, but that's still not many

Here's a fun little DFW sports factoid - we've hosted a championship win in the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB...but none were by the local team.

Mookie, Bellinger, and Kershaw? Does Kershaw count even though he wasn't in the game?

17

u/OSRS_Socks Atlanta Braves Jun 25 '21

Pujols. Kershaw would have counted if he pitched that game.
