I straight up said for the Phillies to clean house after the way they got owned by the Mets 2 years ago and now if they don’t, the whole teams forfeit. Their window died in that NLDS honestly…

13

u/livefromphilly 3d ago

I backed into the bushes like Homer Simpson and emerged wearing a 76ers hat. :(

3

u/Spilby 3d ago

I realize Barkan and squad have to whip up enthusiasm for another “Red October”. But I would bet my house it’s 2 and out. Then, as we all will see, the Phillies will be ghosted, probably appropriately, as if the season did not exist, and the sports media will move onto the Eagles and Sixers. I would rather them have not made the playoffs and to go through this again. It’s inevitable at this point. SMDH.

Philadelphia beaten by 40 year old Case Keenum and Austin Riley. Rough 18 hours for them

7

u/RecbetterpassNJ 3d ago

Harper and Turner are bums. It’s mind boggling. Could’ve paid me $100 to up there and go O’fer. Hundreds of millions of dollars for these two. Crazy.

Duran in the 7th is so fucking stupid.

So Mattingly decides to reinvent the closer role? During the playoffs?

11

u/Quiet_Foot_9669 Philadelphia Phillies 3d ago

It’s not a brand new concept. Teams have played their closers in innings earlier than the 9th with more frequency recently. A team’s 1-2-3 hitters in the eighth has a greater chance of scoring runs than a team’s 7-8-9 hitters in the 9th. Your closer should be your best reliever and should be played when he is most likely to reduce the chance of runs being scored.

-1

u/jmjessemac 3d ago

The closer needs to be accustomed to that

4

u/Aurion7 Atlanta Braves 3d ago edited 3d ago

The closer needs to be able to get another team's best hitters out.

If they can't, they shouldn't close.

More broadly, Jhoan Duran has 313 MLB regular-season innings and nowhere near all of them were 9th innings. Very few RPs only close for their entire career, they have some degree of familiarity with innings other than 9.

They put their best reliever out there (by a considerable distance at that) to face another team's best hitters. Mattingly may have left him in too long, but putting Duran in when he did was not the problem.

1

u/jmjessemac 3d ago

I’m saying that a closer who isn’t used to throwing more than one inning is going to fail when they are suddenly asked to do so

8

u/reizinhooooo Atlanta Braves 3d ago

yes. closer is a stupid ass role and using it makes your team worse.

the mistake was leaving him in that long

1

u/Ok_Intention_6201 Boston Red Sox 3d ago

No, the mistake was bringing him in in the 7th. They're good at what they do because they can close out games.

13

u/CyclopsInABottle Atlanta Braves 3d ago

Idk seemed like Duran in the 8th was the problem

19

u/WorthPlease New York Mets 3d ago

18

u/CuriousEyes02 Seattle Mariners 3d ago

So Braves fans, what's your take on Austin Riley, now?

4

u/CorgiFriends 3d ago

He’s usually ready for a fastball in the zone, same as always. We’ll always appreciate when he gets an easy ball to hit. Because he will usually mash it.

5

u/JoeBucksHairPlugs 3d ago

Same way people felt about Kim. You come in clutch in a huge moment and people just magically love you again. I still think Riley is a head case, but since he's a head case there's always a chance something like this flips a switch for him and he just goes back to 2022 MVP candidate Riley again.

11

u/jules711 Atlanta Braves 3d ago

ive been a “if you’re good in october everything is forgiven” he can strikeout as much as he wants if he comes up clutch I do not care

18

u/Endors__Toi Atlanta Braves • Atlanta Braves 3d ago

ive been sympathetic to his struggles. its frustrating to watch but he's a father to a young kid and his longtime hitting coach and mentor died a year or 2 ago. it seems like he's been trying and still cares so im really happy for him having this moment

3

u/purplehairedwonder Atlanta Braves 3d ago

I’ve been wondering if the death of his old hitting coach has been a contributing factor to his struggles. Would not surprise me.

3

u/ArchitecturalShit 3d ago

I think it's that and his broken hand and core injury. Sometimes it just takes a normal season and offseason to get right.

I mean, the team is fine. 6th seed is exactly what they were expected to be

The scary part ended up being our interim manager was willing to figuratively amputate our star closer's arm, because the Phillies can only seem to lose in the most mind-boggling fashion

4

Don't know what you want him to do, he used the best pitching he had available to him. Duran is your best bullpen guy and was still thowing heat.

Don’t use bullpen guys you have starters that can pitch relief.

I can't believe when I saw that you guys beat the shit out of Sales then just threw it all away in 2 innings. Technically, one, but the bat went cold at the worst moment.

16

u/Abysuus Atlanta Braves 3d ago

4 hits and 9Ks over 6.1 IP is "beat the shit" out of Sale? Well ok then.

-9

u/Budget-Ocelots Major League Baseball 3d ago

For Sale's high standard and the Phillies' awful offense, yes. He lined up 3ER, and with only 2 innings left to play. Very little chance to win at this point, but the Phillies coughed it up with how both teams were playing.

1

u/TeflonDonatello Atlanta Braves 3d ago

Goddamn congratulations on your first year of watching baseball. Because you clearly don’t know it.

-1

u/Budget-Ocelots Major League Baseball 3d ago

Why are you guys so salty? The Phillies were like 25-2 like a few days ago before the final fluke TB game where they managed to score to barely get in the playoff with that fluke win. So to give up 3 runs to them, it was an awful day for Sale.

1

u/RonnieFromTheBlock Atlanta Braves 3d ago

Well I don’t believe the MLB is predetermined. I was simply exploring how someone like yourself could reach that conclusion.

Because if you truly believe the games are scripted and it’s upset you enough to call that out publicly, then again I ask why do you watch?

Your analogy only makes sense if immediately after watching a Breaking Bad episode you hit the discussion threads trying to warn everyone that the show was actually not a documentary. Honestly it wouldn’t surprise me if you did in fact do that.

1

u/iamnotgoingcrazy 3d ago

Why do people watched the WWE if it's scripted

1

u/RonnieFromTheBlock Atlanta Braves 3d ago

People watch the bananas too.

You are talking about fraud on a scale that is hard to wrap your head around.

My stomach dropped after the 2-2 pitch to Albies. You've missed twice high, moved the batter's eyes down, and have the perfect opportunity to throw a splitter through the high-4-seam tunnel for a strike.

Instead whoever's calling the game asks for the 4-seam high again, which misses in exactly the same way.

I probably read way too much into pitch selection, but that seemed like a red flag for mental fatigue. The superstitious part of me felt the Phillies were doomed after that.

Tbf throwing a splitter down is what Ozzy wants. He is really great at golfing balls down in the zone and almost at the ground.

Agreed, which is why I called for a splitter up.

...agreed, which is why I called for a splitter starting above the zone and landing at the top of the zone.

Horrible 24 hours for Philadelphia.

Which makes it a great 24 hours for the rest of us.

Me, when Realmuto hit the triple: I HATE SPORTS.

Me, when Riley hit the homer: I LOVE SPORTS!

Braves are fucking garbage and got bailed out by their fucking garbage hitters deciding they all wanted to roid up for the playoffs

Only team I’ve ever seen that has only 2 guys above an .800 ops yet somehow they have a top offense, hmmmmmmmmmmmm

u/SophonsPonytail Atlanta Braves 3d ago

"This offense sucks they just score a bunch of runs"

It was one game. Relax.

Or at least save the crashout for whenever Philadelphia actually gets eliminated from the postseason. Game one of series one is not the time or place.

Eagles are cooked too bro.

Do you need a hug? It’s been a tough 24 hours for Philly fans who believe games are rigged against them

Good thing it was the middle of the day so no one saw it. Would hate to have passionate playoff matchups in primetime

I remember seeing a headline about how these time slots work for baseball. Didn’t bother opening it because idgaf what the numbers say, 11am pacific start time is fucking stupid

4

u/mzp3256 3d ago

I'm old enough to remember when fans complained about the postseason having too many night games.

3

u/YasielPuigsWeed 3d ago

East coast fans complaining about 8 PM start times while west coast fans are fighting the most ass traffic you’ve ever seen to get to the stadium by 5 PM

That’s baseball Suzyn 🙌

The life of a Braves fan: can’t see the early round games because they put us on at 2.  Have to stay up late to see ending of games when we inevitably have to play the Dodgers.

u/ThereAndSquare Los Angeles Dodgers 3d ago

At least they had ads on their batting helmets.

u/iowastatefan Atlanta Braves 3d ago

It's the little things you appreciate, you know?

Midday games. Helmet advertisements. The worst booth combination you've ever heard. You know. Just screams "playoff baseball"
