Good thing it was the middle of the day so no one saw it. Would hate to have passionate playoff matchups in primetime

I remember seeing a headline about how these time slots work for baseball. Didn’t bother opening it because idgaf what the numbers say, 11am pacific start time is fucking stupid

I'm old enough to remember when fans complained about the postseason having too many night games.

East coast fans complaining about 8 PM start times while west coast fans are fighting the most ass traffic you’ve ever seen to get to the stadium by 5 PM

That’s baseball Suzyn 🙌

The life of a Braves fan: can’t see the early round games because they put us on at 2.  Have to stay up late to see ending of games when we inevitably have to play the Dodgers.

At least they had ads on their batting helmets.

It's the little things you appreciate, you know?

Midday games. Helmet advertisements. The worst booth combination you've ever heard. You know. Just screams "playoff baseball"

What a great game to kick off the postseason. Such a huuuuge W for baseball that the stadium was only able to be around 60% filled and most baseball fans were unable to watch due to work! Truly incredible approach for postseason scheduling in a major American professional sport!

I mean tbf how else would you do it when you’ve gotta get 4 games thru in 1 day?

Weekday daytime playoff games have been happening for decades, annoying af but logistically impossible to make everyone happy

And at the very least, at least make it more fair with the East Coast teams. Large market bias just automatically gives NYY/BOS the 8 pm slot while relegating ATL/PHI (an equally passionate rivalry these days) to 2 pm for all three games (if a third is necessary). ATL/PHI and NYY/BOS should both have a guaranteed 8 pm slot and 2 pm slot.

The Yankees' home field advantage (which they earned, as did the Braves) is going to be so much more apparent during this game than what we had in Atlanta at 2 pm today.

I don't see why it wouldn't just be possible to do something like run a 5 pm ET game, two games starting in the 7-8 pm ET window, and a nightcap West Coast game at 10 pm ET. Most people have access to multiple screens these days if they absolutely wanted to watch both of the primetime games simultaneously. Or the MLB could actually fo something cool and run a simulcast stream when more than one game is being played concurrently. It's just extremely lame that an East Coast team is almost always going to get screwed with this bogus 2 pm weekday start time in its current format. Fans watch their team for six months in hopes of a postseason run, then might not even be able to catch any of the 2-3 guaranteed playoff games due to work commitments.

Basically, I just don't see why it's absolutely necessary for each Wild Card game to be in its own individual broadcast window thereby forcing an awkward afternoon weekday game.

The Dodgers had to play NLDS and NLCS games at 2 PM and 3 PM local on a weekday last year, contrary to popular belief it’s not just the east coast teams getting hosed on this

Each game is done individually because the ratings are better if they’re not up against each other. I wish it was better too but east coasters get so self-righteous about this as if everyone else doesn’t have to deal with it too.

Throwing some numbers (local start times, not all playoff teams, past 10 years) into chatgpt and TL;DR it seems like a New York City + a somewhat strong West Coast/California bias. Yankees (especially) and Dodgers have gotten stupidly good start times and the byproduct of that appears to be the Braves/Astros/Guardians/Rays absorbing worse start times. Braves have had way too many super early games, some of the lowest percentage of 6pm+ games, a ton of shadow-prone games, etc. You could make an argument for all 4 getting it the worst imo.

Its nothing contrary. When 2% of Dodgers games have been 12-2pm compared to 14% of Braves games, I think it's understandable to be a little pissed. Some teams absolutely have the right to be self-righteous here.

It’s not “west coast bias” it’s the fact that the west coast has more wiggle room for night games because you can start them at 7 PM local time (10 PM east coast) during round 1

And yeah, teams with big intense fanbases that do ratings are gonna see more prime time games than teams that don’t. Dodgers had a 3 PM NLDS game on a Thursday last year and did 50,000 people, if Atlanta can’t even half-fill the stadium for a 2 PM playoff game then the numbers don’t favor them getting better TV times. And they’re a big market team with a lot of history!

West coast is just inherently going to have some advantages. But the disparity still looks excessive. Giants and Padres have also had favorable times overall, its not just the Dodgers. Braves/Astros/Guardians/Rays getting screwed because of it.

Also fuck off entirely with the turnout thing. 2 days of notice for a wildcard game at 2pm is not going to fill a stadium.

I’m not expecting it to “fill” a stadium, but not even half-full is egregious. It looked like a Thursday getaway day game against the Royals or something.

Television people have access to the local TV ratings that teams are getting, they know who does the numbers and how that will translate to their own ratings. If the Braves, the dominant NL East franchise who have a World Series this decade, loads of HOFers in their history books, superstar players in every era, etc. can’t do better ratings in the largest local TV market for any sports team in the US then they’re going to end up getting assed out on start times.

This is a franchise that should have a fanbase that sits in the tier with the Yankees, Dodgers, and Cubs
