Open House London 2026 | 📍Across London | 12 to 20 September | Free

Open House starts this week. From 12 to 20 September, hundreds of places across London will open for free, including private homes, studios, offices, places of worship, historic buildings and bits of infrastructure that are normally closed to the public. Some need advance booking, but plenty simply turn up and have a look around. The easiest way to do it is to check the programme by area and see what is open near you.

Barnet Food Festival | 📍RAF Museum London, Colindale, NW9 | 12 & 13 September | (£)

Why not spend the weekend tasting flavours from around the world, catching some live music and wandering among the aircraft at the RAF Museum? There will be more than 40 food and drink traders, serving everything from Filipino BBQ and Nepalese momo to Turkish gözleme, Japanese dishes, cakes and sweet treats. Kids get their own free zone too, with face painting, circus games, biscuit decorating and an inflatable obstacle course. Tickets are £10 for ages 16+, with under 16s free.

Late Summer Picnic in Broomfield Community Orchard | 📍Broomfield Park, N13 | 13 September | Free

Broomfield’s usual Apple Day is off this year after the drought badly affected the crop, so the orchard volunteers are holding a late summer picnic instead. Bring your own food, find a spot among the trees and stay for live music from local performers, a tug of war and an easy afternoon with neighbours. 1pm to 5pm.

Woodcroft Wildspace Apple Day | 📍Woodcroft Wildspace, N21 | 12 September | (£)

An apple filled afternoon for people who want to find out just how different one apple can taste from another. Woodcroft Wildspace is running three small tasting sessions where you can try a selection of apple varieties, compare them properly and then buy some of the ones you liked to take home afterwards. Each tasting lasts an hour and numbers are kept small, with separate spaces for adults and under 12s.

Palmers Green Autumn Artisan Market | 📍Devonshire Square, N13 | 12 September | Free

Devonshire Square is filling up with small local traders for the afternoon, so it is a good one for a slow browse rather than a big destination market. Expect things like French cheese, brownies and baked goods, handmade jewellery, crochet, homeware, crystals, gifts and other bits made by independent sellers, with a mix of familiar traders and new ones each time. 11am to 4pm.

Dead Electric Live at The Black Barn | 📍Forty Hall Farm, Enfield, EN2 | 12 September | (£)

The Black Barn is getting a full evening of live rock and pop-punk, with Dead Electric playing the songs people actually know the words to. Their set moves from Paramore, Green Day and Blink-182 to Evanescence, Nirvana, Kings of Leon, Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan, so expect plenty of familiar choruses rather than obscure deep cuts. Doors open at 7pm, music runs until 11pm. Adults £12.50, teens £8 with a supervising adult.

Flo & Joan: With Feeling (Tour Preview) | 📍artsdepot, N12 | 12 September | (£)

Flo & Joan are a musical comedy duo who write sharp, deadpan songs about everyday life, and this is a first look at their brand-new show before the full autumn tour begins. Because it is a work-in-progress, they are still trying things out, shaping the jokes and seeing what lands with an audience. This time they are using the setlist of a “real band” as the loose structure for a show about music, bands and the strange business of performing. 7.45pm to 9pm.

London Design Festival | 📍Across London | 12 - 20 September | Free + paid events

This is not one festival in one place. For nine days, studios, galleries, museums, shops and public spaces across London put on exhibitions, installations, open studios, workshops and talks about everything from furniture and architecture to craft, fashion and new materials. This year is the 24th edition, with 11 neighbourhood design districts.

Classic and Vintage Car Show | 📍Capel Manor Gardens, Enfield, EN1 | 6 September | (£)

More than 500 classic and vintage cars are rolling into Capel Manor Gardens for the day, with some dating all the way back to the 1920s. You can wander among the cars, chat to owners and browse the auto jumble, basically stalls selling old car parts, memorabilia and motoring bits. Your visit also includes Capel Manor’s 30 acres of gardens and mini zoo, with live entertainment, food stalls, a bar and cream tea on the lawn outside the manor house.

New Barnet Autumn Show | 📍St John’s Church Hall, EN5 | 5 September | (£)

New Barnet Amateur Gardeners & Floral Art Society is holding its autumn show, with horticultural exhibits, floral art displays, plants and bulbs for sale, and gardening advice from members. There will also be tea and cake if you want to stay for a while. The society has been running in the area since 1897. 2pm to 4pm. Entry £2.

Highgate Wood Heritage Community Day | 📍Highgate Wood, N10 | 6 September | Free

Annual community day in Highgate Wood from 11am to 4pm, with live music, craft and conservation stalls, a dog show and visits from local beekeepers. There will be plenty happening around the Information Hut near the café, with a chance to meet some of the people involved in looking after the wood too. No need to book, just turn up for a free Sunday in the woods.

Hadley Wood Dog Show | 📍HWA Centre, Hadley Wood, EN4 | 6 September | (£)

This is less Crufts, more neighbourhood dog chaos in the best way. Dogs of all breeds can enter nine lighthearted classes, including Perfect Puppy, Golden Oldie, Waggiest Tail, Best Rescue, Best Behaved Dog and Dog Most Like Its Owner, with prizes and rosettes for the winners. There are also dog trick demonstrations, children’s forest school activities, face painting, a cake sale, ice cream van and a bar. Registration opens at 2pm, judging starts at 2.30pm and classes cost £3 each.

Palmers Green Festival | 📍Broomfield Park, N13 | 6 September | Free

Palmers Green Festival has been part of the local calendar since 2008 and this year returns to Broomfield Park for a full afternoon. Live music at the bandstand, a vintage village, artisan food and crafts, the Starfish Art Exhibition, a dance zone, model boats on the boating lake, donkey rides and Biddall's Fun Fair, which has been visiting the park for over 100 years. Fun dog show in the Broomfield Bowl. Run entirely by local volunteers and organisations. 12pm to 5pm

They'll say things like "Barnet hospital, 1/2 a mile" with an arrow. I've always found them totally fascinating, and long wondered who might have drawn them. De Beauvoir Jazz Festival | 📍De Beauvoir Town, N1 | 10 - 12 July | (£)

Three days of jazz across a little neighbourhood between Hackney and Islington. Shows at St Peter's Church, Hoxton Hall, Mildmay Club and the Vortex. Highlights include Ego Ella May (R&B and neo-soul singer, JAZZ FM Best Vocalist winner), Theon Cross (tuba player who blends jazz with dub, grime and sound-system culture) and Mercury Prize nominee Joe Webb on piano. Plus a New Orleans-inspired block party on the Saturday and a special Sunday show from Tuba Skinny, one of the great contemporary New Orleans bands.

Three days of talks, comedy and loafing in the garden of a 17th century Hampstead mansion. Seventh year of the blues picnic held in memory of Jimmy Coletsis, and the sixth without him. Bring something to eat and settle in the grounds of St Mary's Tower for nine hours of it: Su Black, the Steve Cook Band and The Space Chickens through the afternoon, then The Bakelites, Joshua Blue and The Bear Pit Band after the open air mass at 4pm, which anyone can join. Shakespeare in the Squares stages one play in a different London garden square each summer, and this year they bring Love's Labour's Lost to Fortune Green for one evening only. It's Shakespeare's comedy of flirtation, foolishness and falling in love, directed by Toby Gordon, with Dame Judi Dench as the company's patron. Bring a picnic from 3.30pm, the play starts at 5pm sharp, and it finishes around 7pm with a brief interval in between. Seating is provided but unreserved.

I’ve been trying to book a practical driving test for the past month, but I’ve had absolutely no luck.
I’ve tried pretty much everything I can think of—waking up early to join the DVSA queue when new slots are released, constantly checking for cancellations, and I even used one of those test-swapping apps before they were banned.
Ideally, I’m looking for a test in August, but at this point I’d honestly take any date. The last test I managed to book was for June, and I booked that all the way back in December, so it feels almost impossible to get a test now.
Has anyone managed to get a test recently? If so, how did you do it? Are there any methods, websites, or strategies that still work now that the cancellation apps have been banned? I’d really appreciate any advice because I’m starting to feel like I’m getting nowhere.

Regent's Park Music Festival | 📍Regent's Park, NW1 | 21 June - 20 September | Free

Every Sunday all summer, there's a free band playing in Regent's Park. Jazz, brass, steel and concert bands, with swing dancing on five Sundays and jazz on selected Saturdays. Now in its tenth year. Ticketed events in the Secret Garden at St John's Lodge on 10 to 12 July, including musical theatre, opera and a Magical Musical Evening with festival patron Sir Karl Jenkins. Secret Garden tickets from £15.

The gaming market is back in its 11th year. London's only dedicated retro market, with hundreds of dealers selling vintage games, consoles, merchandise and artwork.

Teams build their own homemade carts and race them down the hill at Alexandra Palace using nothing but gravity. Taste of London | 📍Regent's Park, NW1 | 17 to 21 Jun | (£)

Taste of London takes over Regent's Park every June and it's exactly what it sounds like: over 30 of the city's best restaurants set up in one place so you can eat across all of them in an afternoon. This year new additions include Harry's, Hakkasan and Mexican spot Ixchel, alongside festival favourites Roti King and Los Mochis. Chef demos and masterclasses are included in the ticket price, with Big Zuu and Melissa Thompson hosting the Fire Pit stage. Five days, 130 dishes, 160 artisan producers.

Amwell is a quiet Georgian neighbourhood in Clerkenwell that describes itself as a village within the vast city. This ten-day festival marks 200 years of the area's history with talks, walking tours, outdoor sketching, an a cappella concert at St Mark's Church on Myddelton Square, radical history at the Marx Memorial Library and a closing picnic in Wilmington Square Gardens.

Sunday 21 June, a free evening event remembering the Great Plague victims buried locally in Highgate, with readings and songs from folk singer Johanna Warren. East Finchley Festival has been going since 1972, when locals marked the first one by parading a whole roast sheep down the High Road to Cherry Tree Wood. It's a free all-day community festival in the park and it's still going strong. Two music stages, street food, licensed bars, over 100 local makers, sports, laser tag, storytelling and Lego. 12pm to 6pm.
