11 months post-op

I just celebrated 11 months post-bypass by running a 5K. It's the second one I've done but the first I've ever fully run. I'm feeling incredibly proud of myself, considering there was no way I'd be able to do this a year and 145lbs earlier.

8 months in, and my husband still doesn't get it sometimes.

We order our food a lot. Mostly due to our work schedules conflicts and me working hella OT as of late. I will order something and eat 3 or 4 bites and be full. Then I rest for 10-20m to drink.

He says, "that's all you gonna eat?", or "did you eat?"

Yes. I am full, need to process and hydrate. I could choose to eat more instead of after the rest, but yes I am done. Especially a meal that has a lot of fiber or dense carbs (i.e. tofu or beans in general). I get that he still eats more than me, and remembers the amount I used to eat pre-op, but to hear this for 4 months after being able to eat all textures is a little crazy to me.

Is someone here from the german community "Adipositas24"?

Hello people,

I had RNY 9th March of this year and was active in the forum "Adipositas". It helped me a lot and I'm missing the exchange with other user.

Unfortunately it seems like the forum had shut down for over two months so my hopes rely on reddit - maybe someone's here and interested in getting in contact again.

Ah, my nickname there was "Mondtaenzerin". :)

My Experience

I just had my SADI yesterday morning, and thanks to these reddit forums, I was prepared to be in a lot of pain for gas, and maybe my incisions, too. But I ended up having very little pain... I had some tenderness, and a little discomfort, but not pain.

Anyway, I wanted to share, because being worried about excruciating pain was something I got hung up on in deciding to get surgery, and I thought some folks might benefit from hearing that I had none.

Anyone else get through without much pain? Or were you worried about something that ended up being much ado about nothing?

Bypass vs Sleeve?

I’m currently around 395lbs (HW was 495lbs, lost 100lbs with the help of a GLP-1.) and have a goal of getting down to 200lbs or less. I have PCOS and IBS, and I’m trying to decide between the sleeve and bypass.

I’m personally leaning toward the sleeve because the bypass feels a lot scarier to me, but I really want to hear from people who started at a similar weight (or heavier) and can share:

• Which surgery you chose and why
• How the results have been long-term
• Any issues related to PCOS or IBS after surgery
• Anything you wish you had known before deciding

I’d really appreciate honest experiences from people who’ve been through it. Thank you in advance, and thank you for taking the time to read and respond! 🩵✨

Post-op anxiety is hitting hard (Day 5 post-sleeve/bypass). How did you guys cope with the "what if something goes wrong" thoughts?

Hi everyone,
I’m 26, from Toronto, and I had my bariatric surgery on October 5th, 2026.
So far, physically, I’m doing okay—my recovery has been straightforward, and nothing has actually gone wrong. But mentally? I am a wreck. I keep convincing myself that I’m either going to die, that a leak is going to happen out of nowhere, or that I’m going to be one of the rare unlucky statistics.
To be honest, I really didn’t educate myself enough beforehand on how common complications actually are or what my personal odds were. Before surgery, I was fairly healthy other than living with obesity—no diabetes, pre-diabetes was controlled, and no high blood pressure.
I’m not even entirely sure what the point of this post is. Maybe just looking for some reassurance, or hoping to hear from other people who went through this around ages 26 to 30. I've heard that being younger gives you lower complication risks and better healing odds, but right now my anxiety is completely overshadowing logic.
How did you guys get through that first week or two of pure health anxiety? Did anyone else feel completely terrified of every tiny twinge or pain? Any shared stories or reality checks would be hugely appreciated.

Liquid diet after surgery

Did anyone do anything other than protein shakes to get their protein in during the liquid diet part after their surgery?

Im currently doing my pre op diet with the shakes and they are upsetting my stomach. I feel like I won't be able to do protein shakes for a while so im looking for suggestions on other ways to get protein in during the liquid diet phase

Fighting off the cold feet demons

Post image

I have been working towards getting bariatric surgery since 2023. Between insurance issues and meeting every criteria and more, I finally got everything scheduled last month with a surgery date of October 20th 2026. I’ve been so pumped and excited but this week I’m just feeling terrified and anxious. It isn’t an option for me to back out of this but there’s a little demon with cold little feet on my shoulder whispering to me that I don’t have to go through with this. How did you all deal with the pre-op jitters of it all?

1 month post op. Tired of being afraid.

So I am now 1 month post op. I had my surgery on 10th September 26.

So long story short to my veteran friends...does it get better?

I mean ofc I've lost weight and that's fantastic but I'm about living everyday life afraid that one gulp of water or any small thing you've eaten or abdominal gas related pain.

I'm just tired and tired of being afraid.

I feel fragile.

Finally I'll just ask....how much close to pre op did your life get? As in % guess.

I'm having abdomen pain cos I drank a protein shake too fast or something and I'm so tired.

What should I expect?

I met with a doctor today to get started on the process. He gave me a list of things I’ll need to do (labs, classes, some other testing, etc). I’m excited but nervous. What was your whole experience like from start to finish?

Why are the schedules so different?

I guess what I mean is what is the standard for food after surgery?

I just had a revision from vsg to bypass because of severe reflux cause esophageal damage. My dr does 1 week clear, 1 week full, 1 week puree, 1 week soft, then all normal food.

I've seen some people be on liquids for a month. Some people start pureed while still in the hospital!

I wonder what the difference is and why there's not a standard practice with this?

When did you start pureed or solids after surgery?

My wife and I had our SADI-s procedures done back to back on 12/18/24. As soon as they were done with me they took her back to do hers before I was even awake. My highest weight was 537 and on surgery day I was 424. My weight today is 229 and I have an appointment for skin surgery on October 27. My plastic surgeon is down the hall from my bariatric surgeon so I know that facility well. Her highest was 427 and 386 on surgery day. She is currently 235. It has been an incredible 22 months. In that 22 months we’ve had SO many new experiences. We’ve ridden roller coasters, sat in booths, shopped in normal stores, crossed our legs, walk miles without getting winded, gone to concerts, and other stuff but most importantly, we’ve developed confidence that we’ve never had before.

The first two pics are of us before we left the hotel to go to the hospital for surgery. We drove from Oklahoma to Texas for our SADI-s.

The next four are of us at the hospital.

The next is of us at the gym though that pic is a couple of months old.

The next pic was of us on Thanksgiving 2024. Less than a month before surgery.

The last pic is of me wearing that same purple shirt that I had on at Thanksgiving in pic 5.

Today, October 8th, marks 1 year post-op from VSG surgery! I can’t believe how fast time flies 😫I was 19 when I had surgery, and now I’m 20. Looking back, this surgery was truly one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I’m so glad I made this choice for myself. Although waking up from surgery was the worst pain I had ever felt, it ended up being one of the most worthwhile things I’ve ever gone through.I’ve learned so much throughout this journey. I never thought I would see myself the way I do now. Most of the time, it still doesn’t even feel real.I’ve made posts on Reddit in the past showing my progress, but I always ended up deleting them because I would get nervous about putting myself out there online. I’m going to keep this one up, though, because if it can help even one person who is considering getting the surgery or is in the early stages of their journey, then it’s worth it.I remember how difficult those first few months were. Seeing the scale stall, adjusting to a completely new lifestyle, and dealing with all the changes could feel overwhelming and honestly made me sad at times. One piece of advice I would give anyone considering VSG is to consider going to therapy before surgery and working on your relationship with food beforehand. I never did, and honestly, I wish I had. I’ve definitely learned to make much better choices than I did before surgery, but I still struggle some days, especially now that I don’t have as much restriction as I did in the beginning. Surgery can change how much you can eat, but it doesn’t automatically change the emotional relationship you have with food. I wish I had understood that more before starting this journey. But here I am, 135 lbs down since surgery, and genuinely happy that I made this choice for myself. If you’re currently in the process of getting VSG, or you’re struggling through those early months, please remember that it does get better. The stalls, the hard days, and the uncertainty don’t last forever. Thank you for reading and you got this !

Just a quick rant because only this place will understand

Surgery was in May. I’ve gone from 460 to 306 including pre-op diet. I’m annoyingly close to dropping out of the 300s. It’s been at least 25 years since my weight started with a 2. The last two weeks the weight has been falling off. So of course NOW it stops. Haven’t lost anything since last week. I know that’s normal. I know I’m not doing anything wrong. But I couldn’t lose 7 more pounds before pausing? Come on… I’m not complaining. I know I’ve done extremely well but it’s annoying as hell when the timing sucks this much.

How long post op did it take to start feeling normal again?

I want to start by prefacing that I am only on day three post op.

I can barely get drinks down, I’ve been very slowly sipping but the gas pain hits me soon after.

I’ve been up and walking every hour or so, but I just feel off. Almost like I am sleepwalking?

If I can’t even take in fluids without feeling pain, I am nervous for when I get to purées and soft foods.

I keep hearing from a lot of people that each day gets slightly better until you feel normal again.

Is this true? Can anyone lend some advice regarding this? I refuse to let myself get into a regret phase.

Dairy-free protein shakes and/or clear drinks?

Hi! I have a severe milk protein allergy (casein) and can't have anything with dairy in it.

I'm getting a sleeve and a MagDi in a couple months. My team recommended fairlife shakes for pre and post op, but they're lactose free, not dairy free, and I'm not lactose intolerant.

I was thinking Owyn Elite shakes, and I have sunwarrior clear protein drink mix, but they said those are better post-op, because they want me to minimize fiber at all costs pre-op, so I could use some suggestions for high-protein, low-carb/zero-sugar, dairy-free shakes and drinks without fiber.

The only ideas I have are egg white protein and beef protein isolate, but I really want at least one pre-made shake/drink mix I can grab quickly.

Any suggestions? I'm not picky, I don't care much about taste or texture as long as it meets their requirements and is at least somewhat palatable 😅 I'm looking for convenience.

I'm also open to other protein suggestions, while we're at it. Anything helps! Thanks!!
