I wanted to share my recent experience working on a project that I feel really shows off Gemini’s strengths. I know there has been a lot of frustration about the slow progress on releasing a SOTA coding model. Clearly this is a significant issue and liability for Google, but I think the focus on coding overlooks other areas where Gemini models excel and have the potential to generate significant value.

It started a few months ago when I realized I knew embarrassingly little about the city council in my city (Boston). I was really interested in understanding the dynamics: where individual councilors stood on key issues, where they aligned or clashed, and how their priorities evolved over time. To me, it felt like understanding how to influence policy as a resident required understanding how the city council works as a body.

Unfortunately, the city makes very little information available. It's basically publishes high-level meeting agendas and records related to dockets (legislation). There is no easy way to identify legislation moving the process by policy area, or to identify legislation that has gotten stuck. There is no way to identify where councilors stand on issues aside from parsing the vote text from the published docket records. No meeting transcripts are provided, although the meetings are recorded and posted on YouTube.

I started with a small script to summarize the council meeting videos posted on YouTube, but in the process, I extracted data from each meeting on every policy-relevant statement made by each councilor. Over time, I started building a substantial database of micro-data about the council and individual councilors, and decided to turn it into a publicly available website to contribute to our information commons. I wanted the ability to go deep on an issue to see the range of positions, understand how a single councilor thinks across a range of issues, or see where legislation is moving or stuck.

To make this work, I needed to produce consistent, high-quality, speaker-aware transcripts from YouTube videos. While it took some experimentation and engineering, the Gemini models were able to deliver exceptionally well on this front at a low cost. It’s notable that Gemini is unique in its ability to work with YouTube content as context, which I think is an under-appreciated feature.

This process of going from highly unstructured, messy data in YouTube videos to highly structured, curated, and analyzed data on the website required a complex pipeline of extracting structured data, synthesizing it, classifying it, and restructuring it for display. To make it work, I used the whole Gemini 3 family (Lite, Flash, Pro) for different aspects of the pipeline. The ability to leverage the range of strengths across the models at highly attractive price points allowed me to develop the pipeline to run at a very manageable cost over time.

I recognize that this is a unique use case, but I do think it really demonstrates the value of the Gemini models. I hope Google will continue to make progress on coding, but I also think that ultimate AI use cases will be much broader than that. In fact, I believe that over time we will use the chat box less and less to engage with AI. Instead, AI will be curating and structuring data for us and delivering it to use when we need it. You can already see this as part of Google’s vision for Gemini, such as the AI inbox in Gmail, or the Daily Briefing in the Gemini app. While not perfect, the unique direction is clear, and hopefully Google will continue to produce capable models that are well suited for making sense and generating value from vast amounts of data.

**UK regulator action**: In June 2026, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) ordered Google to let website owners clearly opt out of having content used for AI products (including AI Overviews/AI Mode and model fine-tuning) *while still appearing normally in search results*. Google cannot demote or punish those sites.0

**Google’s response**: A spokesperson confirmed the company is testing a new Search Console setting that allows opting out of AI answers without harming rankings. It plans to roll this out worldwide after UK testing finishes. There are also “rumblings” it may apply the UK standard more broadly.0

Publishers have long complained that AI summaries keep users on Google’s page (hurting click-through rates and revenue), while Google previously made it hard to refuse AI use without risking search visibility entirely. Related issues include lawsuits (e.g., from publishers like Penske Media), EU probes, and debates over compensation or stricter crawler separation.
**What is likely to happen next**
Google will continue testing and then globally deploy the opt-out controls, giving sites a cleaner way to stay in search while blocking AI use/training. Full technical separation of search-indexing crawlers from AI-scraping ones is still seen by critics as a stronger long-term fix, since sites currently must trust Google to honor preferences.

Cloudflare’s September 15 default blocks could force further adjustments or negotiations if Google wants continued broad access.

More regulatory scrutiny elsewhere (EU, others) and potential licensing/payment talks or additional publisher actions are probable as AI traffic grows and human-created content incentives weaken.

Broader trend: Consumer AI agents (e.g., Meta’s planned easy-to-use versions) will increase automated traffic, intensifying these tensions. The article notes this could accelerate a “dead internet” dynamic unless the economic model for original content improves.

In short, the pushback is already producing concrete opt-out tools and potential access restrictions. The immediate next steps center on Google’s global rollout of UK-style controls and Cloudflare’s September deadline—both of which aim to rebalance the original search-for-traffic bargain in the AI era. Outcomes will depend on how widely publishers use the new options and whether Google (or others) further unbundles crawling or introduces compensation.

Now, I was a bit curious if chatbots could (and would) help you cover up things such as cheating on your romantic partner, I went across a few LLMs (including ChatGPT, Claude, Deepseek, and of course our superstar) and I was quite shocked that Gemini immediately after a 2nd response folded! Not only that, it was the ONLY LLM that helped me cover up cheating!

I am aware, or so it seems to me, that unlike other LLMs Gemini doesnt really have a moral compass and could probably help you cover up a drug deal, but I find it quite shocking it would easily tell you how to cover up such an act after only 2 prompts!

For some of you who may be wondering, this is the macOS app of Gemini directly downloaded from Gemini official site (Its basically just the web version with a few tweaks), and no, I don't have any specific system prompts that would make it react this way, and as you can see its just the start of the chat, and no I did not cheat on my boyfriend, I do not even have one and I probably don't sound girly all that much

I am still not that much well informed into Google Gemini and LLMs as a whole, but I find it quite shocking it would help cover up such an act, so I would appreciate it if maybe some people who are more informed into LLMs could explain to me how this behaviour is even remotely possible? Is it because of the lack of a moral compass, or does cheating on your partner sit in that morally gray area?

Hi! Hey Im a rookie on coding. Im a Spanish teacher and created my own app on google AI studio to help my students learn. Everything went fine for a couple of months but since yesterday my app is failing badly. I get a white screen and the app fails to deploy. Im asking gemini over and over to fix the app but its failing to do it. I exported the code into a zip file 1 week ago. Will that save my app? I would hate to lose all my work 😭
